I don't have a 250 HP, but have been in, and driven, boats with the Merc 250 Racing Optimax, the 250 Verado, the Yamaha 250 HPDI, 250 4 Stroke, and the 250 Etec. The Yamaha HPDI was a smooth, and quiet runner, As I recall, on a 621 Ranger, we got about 52-53 with it on Lake Erie with a slight chop. Hole shot was OK, but I don't know if was optimally propped. The 250 4-stroke Yamaha was very quiet. The 250 Etec was a strong runner. Good holeshot, and top end, on a Stratos MSX21.

I've had more exposure with the Mercs. The 250 Racing Optimax was an awesome performer. Great hole shot, and the thing pulled hard to WOT. Great top end. I've been in Tuffy's, Rangers, Lunds, and Crestliners with that motor. Awesome performance. The 250 Pro/XS should be even better. The 225 Pro/XS was an awesome motor on the 621 and 620 Rangers I drove with it. I wish my Tuffy 1890 was a few inches longer, hehehe. The 250 Verado is a pretty cool motor. Great performance for a 4-stroke, there is no other 4 stroke out there that compares. The supercharger is the difference. Low end trque for a great holeshot, and power all the wat through midrange and up. Extremely quiet. The DTS, digital shift and steer is like nothing you've ever driven. Smooth quite shifts, and throttle response, you have to relearn how to drive boats! About the only thing I can say bad is the mileage at WOT suffers. But if you're at cruising rpm, around 4000, it's much better.

Hope this helps a bit. As always, the dealer you choose to work with will have a big impact on your level of satifaction. If you have a great dealer, you're ahead of the game already.
