I think Shep has it mostly right.
If your guages read correctly when running, don't sweat it. When you shut down, and everything does not zero out, you have shut off the connection. Run out off gas, or disconnect the fuel from the engine while running, the guages would zero out. Don't sweat the small stuff, and just fish your fish.
