Seeing muskynut09's post, I thought about my situation and what might help me could also help others like 09.....

I am actively seeking a used boat as well and have been schooled in the things that Hulbert, Nelson, and Winther are saying. I also feel comfortable that my research and decisions about different brands/models, specs, engines hp, storage, electronics, etc. will be good.

What I am leery about is not knowing what things to look for that are tip offs to a bad (or good deal). How can I tell what is "normal" wear on a glass or aluminum hull? Is a crack in a glass hull a surface scratch, is it a minor crack in the gel coat, or are there major issues? If I can not get the engine to a dealer to check out, is there anything I can do as a lay person to check it out? What year models of a particular engine have been known to have certain problems? What other tips / reccomendations / tricks can you give the people in search of used rigs, good or bad?

If we all could buy a used boat from say.....Roger Sabota, I can cut him a check no questions asked. I think Rog presses his blue jeans and uses a tooth brush to clean the boat ;). But we all know that is not going to happen in most cases. Hope others can benefit from this post too.
