that size would work fine, but I would think on a boat of that size you could maybe go to an 8 hp. A little smaller in size too. Yamaha makes the big foot in the 8hp and that thing supposedly has a bunch of thrust to it.

Either way, I'd go long shaft. If you go short shaft, you might end up pushing more water right at the transom of the boat when in reverse, making the boat not respond anywhere near as fast...all your thrust is going at the transom.
