The spring loaded shift dog goes into forward when not forced into neutral by the oil pump. The engine actually starts in forward-for a brief moment- before it shifts into neutral. Prop turns maybe a third of a turn before it stops. The shift solenoids are no longer available from Bombardier. A test of the wires and solenoids needs to be done to see works and what doesn't . The Johnson shift switch in the remote control box is available if needed-pricey though. As with anything nearly 35 years old, condition if the wires in the harness should be checked. There are a lot of these 3 cylinders engines in the non-electric shift area, 1973 and up that can be had fairly cheap. I would get a newer unit before putting too much $$$'s in yours. Models above 1984 are prop shaft rated and offer a little more go than the crankshaft rated models prior to '84. If you are determined to keep the '72 at all costs, buy a service manual for it +-$35.00 and locate all the junk yard dealers in you area.
