Buy a product called akemi #7 . This is a Polyester bonding compound with BPO Hardner. I use it to repair molds and Fiberglass. If you worried about strength add some choppedstrands or milled fibers to strengthen. The idea of the plate I would definatley do. Its a added safety net and you spread the span of impact out when you do this.
