try changing props, and find out what the max rpm's are and go buy a cheap handheld digital tach and run the engine with the cover off get the max rpm's with the right prop and you'll pick up maybe a couple of mph. I use a 4.5 pitch on a 18ft boat and I'm at about 6,000 rpm and I gained 2-3 mph.
