The only channel anyone uses around me is 68, basic public access back and forth between boats. If someone is going to have a lengthy chat they should tell the other party to go up or down a few channels to a specific number so they don't hog up all the air waves. They also use 68 on Lake Ontario so maybe it's universal. Also, the lowest numbers are weather station forecasts, NOAA and stuff.
