I have a 99 Silverado 1500 new body style w/ 5.3 It has more torque than my 97 w/ the 5.7. It tows my big Aluma and my fiberglass pop-up no problem.
This 5.3 vortec has 130,000 now and all I've replaced is the fuel pressure regulator and the shift solenoids in the tranny.

The only concern I would have is that your Ranger is a heavy load but that ranger trail trailer is a gem with the cool hub brakes etc....

The new vortecs are nice and I'll buy another when its time.....
