It depends on how the bottom returns are showing up. The lower settings are more powerful in that they will have better returns at deeper depths than Mega. But under 20' I'm usually looking at the high end for more definition. Check out Doug Vahrenberg on youtube or the BBC Humminbird forum for what his recommendations are. I also have mine set on salt water (shallow) vs fresh, and I'm constantly adjusting the dash unit for the constantly varying conditions as the boat moves. The bow unit gets adjusted a lot less as I'm moving slower.
