Part ONE: SOMEHOW all of your gear has been stolen, or donated by your spouse to charity or lost in a horrid fire where you lost your gear but saved a bus full of penguins….you make up the circumstances (maybe extra credit for making up a good story?)! BUT, fortune smiles and your insurance adjuster was able to negotiate a settlement wherein you RECEIVED A $7,000 GIFT CERTIFICATE FROM ROLLIE AND HELENS!!! (oh, your boat and truck were lost also, pick WHATEVER you would replace them with…do I hear more extra credit?). And now you’re ready to gear up for the season with whatever you can buy from Rollie and Helen’s from the $7,000 gift certificate.
And know that in later portions of this contest, you’re going to be fishing….ALOT. Just a hint for later…you might want to be ready to say fish in three different areas, for maybe 6 or 7 in total? Might want to prepare for this. No, I’m not telling you now where you’re going to fish, and it’s possible you won’t have that much choice down the road, but be ready for anything.
So, what are you going to buy with your $7K at Rollie’s? Remember, you have NOTHING right now beyond clothes and somehow a free pass to fish for 6-7 months without having to work, play father/mother/sister/brother.
Use Rollie and Helen’s website (http://www.muskyshop.com) and tell us all what you’re buying. Entries will be judged by completeness in buying of everything you need, overall preparedness, not forgetting things, etc.
List what you bought, tell us all how much each cost, and give an overall spending accounting. It is possible you will also be judged on closeness to complete spending, and you wont have a chance to buy more in later rounds.
There will be EIGHT winners from this round. Each winner will receive a MuskieFIRST.com T-shirt and will compete in round 2 versus the other 7 winners for round 2. Not to worry, everyone else will also get to compete in the later rounds....

Due to a pet raccoon induced electrical fire, my entire detached garage burnt to the ground that had the boat and all my musky gear inside at the time. After receiving a call that my garage was on fire from a concerned neighbor, I totaled my Subaru Brat(old tow vehicle)hitting a fire hydrant in the frantic rush to save aforementioned boat/musky gear.

Location: Lake St.Clair | Well few days ago my 1996 dodge caravan with home made hitch broke down with my 14ft Cadillac on I94 on the way to fish. Ended up walking home and within 3 hours of me being gone my boat and gear was all stolen.. Received my compensation check from the insurance company and a 7k gift card for the shop and this is what i did!
Still waiting for the insurance company to replace my mini van but it will need some diy welding for my new hitch. My boat ended up coming up for sale on Craigslist a few days after the incident. So i called the police and met with the guy and police! Boats back in hands!!!
For my Rollie and Helen's gift card was spent this way to replace all my belongings and then some.

| I'm going to bend the rules a bit and be honest.
First, let's start with how it all happened...
Headed up for a week on Eagle a few weeks back... All my gear, all my baits, all my rods, reels, rain gear, and my standard issue 1.75l bottle of crown all packed in the truck. I wanted to make sure the Crown was somewhere accessible in case the border patrol folks wanted to verify that we were indeed only bringing the allowed amount of alcohol. Ran out of room in the truck and had to put the Crown on the floor of the passenger seat. Well, as many of you know, the drive through MN gets pretty #*^@ boring. I decided about half an hour outside of International falls to break up the monotony with a road soda. A few fingers aren't going to hurt anything, right? Only problem was I didn't have anything to pour it into. So I've got the bottle in my lap, and I'm digging around trying to find a cup or something. Hmm. I need gas. Better stop and get gas before I decide to crack this bottle...
So I fill up the tank just South of International falls, buy a Coke, so I have a cup, and get back on the road. Drink half the coke, put the cup on my lap, remove the lid, open the bottle of crown, and just as I am about to pour it, I see a deer in front of me... RIGHT in front of me. Stomped on the brakes, swerved, hit the #*^@ deer anyway. Wrecked the front of my truck, busted the windshield. So now I'm driving with my head out the window because I can no longer see out of the windshield. Outside of the truck is covered in blood, hair and deer #*#*. Inside of the truck is covered in booze, because the bottle went flying on impact and smashed all over the place. I'm soaked and I smell like a drunk... even my ass is wet. And it's getting #*^@ cold with the window open. I'm driving along, trying to figure out what I am going to tell the border patrol. The deer incident will be easy to explain, but 1.75l of whiskey all over me and the inside of the truck will not. Finally It dawns on me. I've got heated seats! Maybe that will warm me up some and dry my pants so I'm not sitting in booze for the next three hours.
As anyone with half a brain would know, anything that uses electricity to generate heat does not function properly when you get it wet. In fact they tend to short out generating lots of smoke, sparks, and often fire. Add in the better part of a gallon of flammable liquid, and you can guess what happens next. Needless to say, the whole mess went up in smoke. The good news is that I got out of the truck in time to avoid serious injury, and remembered to stop, drop, and roll since my ass was on fire.
So what to do now???
Step 1: Put the $7,000 R&H gift certificate up for sale on the BST forum for $6,500.
Step 2: Presuming that someone would not turn down a chance to get a $7k gift card for $500 off, I'd go shopping:
1. Buy a good pair of polarized sunglasses: $200
2. Buy a good set of Goretex Rain Gear: $350
3. Buy a bunch of tools and such:
Knipex, Jaw Spreaders, Good Pliers, split ring pliers, and a hook file: Figure $200 for the tools
4. For rods/reels/lures/net, tackle box, etc: I'd head over to the BST forum, and buy it all used. 20 lures that would cover various depths and conditions, all black. Based on years of searching the forums, I'd say I could get everything I would need/want for $1,000.
That would leave me $4,750. I figure I'd need to put $1k into the boat to fix it up.
That leaves $3,750.
Since I lost my tow vehicle, and presumably would have around $12k from the insurance company for my truck? I'd buy whatever tow vehicle I could get for $8k, and toss the other $4k into the fishing fund.
That leaves me with $7,750 for gas, trips, food, lodging, and a slush fund to cover whatever breaks on the boat or truck.
Cheap boat, cheap truck, 20 baits, two combos, release tools, net, done. Figure another $250 for the "gotta have it" stuff, like a spare combo, leaders, hooks, snaps, extra line, spare pawls/worm gears... I'm good to go, with $7500k to spare.

Location: central Wisconsin | It started like this; my brother scored two tickets for the Bears/Packers game on Monday night. Being the good brother he invited me to go, well as you know the game turned into a disaster with Rodgers breaking his collarbone and the Pack losing to the hated Bears. So we thought on the way home we would stop at Hooters and drown our sorrows. Drinking a beer, eating some wings my phone rings. Yup it is my wife wondering where I was. I told her we stopped at Hooters for some breasts and thighs, err I mean wings and beers. Slam goes the phone. I told my brother we have to get home as she has a bad temper. We made it home in a couple of hours, I go out in my garage and notice that there is absolutely no fishing gear left. Crazy woman that she is, she took it all out to the middle of No-Bottom Lake and sank it all. Luckily after haggling with my insurance company they cut me a check for $7000 which I promptly took to Rollie and Helens and bought what you see below.

Location: Lincoln, NE | So as usual, I wake up next to a naked Mila Kunis, and she says "Hey did you hear Led Zeppelin's going to do a reunion tour?" I jump up and start doin my funky party dance and throwing sweet karate moves like Mac off Always Sunny in Philadelphia and accidentally Bruce Lee kick a lit candle through the window and it lands on my boat in the driveway. Apparently the tarp's really flammable and I lose the boat, truck, trailer, everything. I then get a brand new Black 4 door Duramax to pull a brand new Ranger. I'd proceed to deck out the Ranger with giant logos on the side. One side is a Musky eating a walleye and the other is a Flathead Catfish eating a walleye so when I cruise through walleye tournaments they know what's up. Then I'd have a sirens and flashing cop lights mounted on it that go off whenever we put a Musky in the boat and a scrolling wall street style LED banner that displays the measurements so it looks like a slot machine hitting the big one. And don't forget the Horn on Gondor mounted on it that gets blown for every 50"er too.

And since my computer's broke at home and I'm doing this at work and am now getting way too busy to continue with details I'd split the remaining amount between Pounder Bulldawgs, Monster Medussas, Phantoms, Hardheads, Eagle Tails, a few mag dawgs a few twin 10's, a decent amount of single 8's bucks, leader material and terminal tackle, tax, shipping, a Musky Shop Hoodie and energy drinks if they carry them (I've never been in the physical store). About 70/30 split between bright/firetiger and natural patterns.

So as usual, I wake up next to a naked Mila Kunis, and she says "Hey did you hear Led Zeppelin's going to do a reunion tour?" I jump up and start doin my funky party dance and throwing sweet karate moves like Mac off Always Sunny in Philadelphia and accidentally Bruce Lee kick a lit candle through the window and it lands on my boat in the driveway. Apparently the tarp's really flammable and I lose the boat, truck, trailer, everything. I then get a brand new Black 4 door Duramax to pull a brand new Ranger. I'd proceed to deck out the Ranger with giant logos on the side. One side is a Musky eating a walleye and the other is a Flathead Catfish eating a walleye so when I cruise through walleye tournaments they know what's up. Then I'd have a sirens and flashing cop lights mounted on it that go off whenever we put a Musky in the boat and a scrolling wall street style LED banner that displays the measurements so it looks like a slot machine hitting the big one. And don't forget the Horn on Gondor mounted on it that gets blown for every 50"er too.

| Ok I'll start it off with a partial true story of how a Muskie trip started for my buddy mike and I had a few years back. We left his place around 3am. Half way to town Mike realizes he forgot a fry pan for lunch so we turn around and go back.500 yards from mikes house a truck swerves in our lane, the driver clearly slumped over asleep at the wheel,Probly a drunk that just left the bar.he runs us off the rd.the truck rolls dwn a very steep hillside and piles into the trees at the bottom. We climb out just as it catches fire and burns the whole rig gear and all to the ground. | I actually had all of my gear stolen out of my boat. My buddy and I had fished the MN opener in the Metro, came home, didn't unload the boat as we were fishing again early the next morning and woke up to find everything gone. I didn't get quite $7,000, but I got a bone from the insurance company. Lesson learned, no matter how tired, or how soon I'll be out again, I unload everything every time. | This hit close to home for me. A few years back I had all my gear stolen from my boat, which was, stupidly, left parked on the street overnight. I didn't get nearly $7000 from insurance, so this was a lot more enjoyable than going through it in real life!

Location: Mayville, WI | The day before started off as one of those fall days you dream about; the sun peeking out from behind its cloudy curtain just enough to take the crispness out of the air. A front was approaching, but only a slight breeze to dance among the fallen leaves and send a slight shudder across the lake greeted me upon my arrival.
The conditions were lining up to make for an enjoyable day between the oars with a full moon on the way, approaching front, and ciscoes stacking up to comingle under the cloak of night. My Whitehall was the lone sentry on the lake with a keen watch on the expanse ahead for signs of life.
It was turning out to be an exceptionally quiet day except for the lonely call of a passing loon with dreams of warmer waters. But I kept at it, kept plying the oars in hopes that one of my boards would promenade back to a singing drag. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be with the stillness shortly interrupted by the bellows of an unfamiliar voice.
“Get off my water and stop your #*^@ trolling!” soon greeted my ears like a train wreck.
A bit startled, but unperturbed, I carried on, figuring it best to simply ignore interruption and continue on. What followed next was a tapestry of profanities woven so well even the Pope was throwing up Hail Marys from the Vatican.
“This is [profanity redacted] Vilas County, those [profanity redacted] yellow [you get the point] boards will never be allowed up here as long as my [once again] boots still tread this […and again] ground you [we really didn’t need this one].”
Startled now, I glanced around trying to pinpoint the orator of such profound wisdom. My eyes scanned the shore to be greeted by an unruly old man straight from the annals of fishing lore. He stood about 6’, a slight hunch with his age and cloaked by a flannel checkerboard jacket and with a tan hat. Seeing as how I was rowing and well within our friendly handbook from the men in brown, I retorted to inform the man this, but was again interrupted by a flow debauchery.
My lungs tried again to dam the flow of obscenities and inform this “gentleman” of his misinterpretation. But it was too late, the visitor was bumbling up the hill and my response was replied with a squeal of tires and cloud of smoke as his woody Buick Roadmaster chugged away.
The rest of the day was much the same as it had been before; quiet. So I loaded up and headed for home. With the boat tucked in for the night I figured it best for me to do the same with another full day on schedule for tomorrow.
I awoke much earlier than expected. Rather than my eyes being greeted by dawn and the sun creeping up it was still black, black with a familiar smell wafting through the air and an odd, flickering glow sending shadows frolicking across the room. Groggy, I wiped away the Sandman’s work and came to: FIRE! This wasn't the familiar glow of dawn; it was flames leaping from the garage causing these demons to prance across my bedroom, haunting me as I sprang from my bed.
I sprinted outside to see the tree line awash in hues of yellow, orange, and red with the garage ablaze in a devilish glory and a solitary figure standing nearby. As I approached I could tell it was him, the checkered avenger from earlier, and he was frantically fanning the flames, urging them to grow with one of my oars, the only remaining shred of unsinged equipment from the garage.
By this time I could take no more and sprinted in a blind, mad rage but was stopped short only by the sound of his six-shooter getting prepared to bark.
“I told you once you [redacted] that you’d never be able tow them dad-blasted [further redaction] yellow [blank] planers off your boat again and, if’n ya know what’s good for you, you’ll stay right there!”
There was no other choice; my only chance to retort was nestled in its safe inside the house.
“Now, you see, I’m going to get on out of here, and if you make ONE [redacted] move it’ll be your last.”
Just then I got to witness the same wagon chug away, again, and become a specter in the night.
Everything was lost, turned to a pile of unrelenting coal as an early gift from the crazed, forked tongued Santa. I relayed all the vivid imagery to the local 5-0, but nothing has become of him yet, some saying it’s all in my head. Fortunately though, it was insured to the hilt and, in a stroke of luck, Christmas will come early.
I was blessed with a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel to lead my way to ventures yet to come with a Tuffy X-190 decked out with the latest and greatest in digital fishing advancements and conveniences tucked tightly in line. Its decks and compartments stuffed with a shopping spree, the likes of which not seen since the Louisiana Purchase, at muskie fishing’s hallowed halls: Rollie & Helens. What lies before me may not be known and the road less traveled, but welcomed with open arms.

Location: Perryville, MO | You guys are never going to believe what happen to me…I’m not sure if I believe it myself.
It started as a pretty typical day. I went into to work before the crack of dawn. Finished the things that I really had to get done for the day before my secretaries ever arrived. When the girls got to the office a cup of warm coffee was delivered to my desk by the new one – the one who wears skirts that wouldn’t serve well as a proper blindfold. She’s a sight to behold and her flirting is nice; but she’s no help when it comes to the execution of my get-away plan. It gave me time, anyway, to check out the M1 boards. I knew it wouldn’t take too long before my administrative secretary would come in with questions on all the work I had dropped on her desk. She’s much more attentive to details than the younger girls; and as motherly as she is, she worries about me when she thinks I’ve spent too much time in the office. Sometimes it takes a little effort to look out-of-sorts (you know, papers all over the place, neck tie already loosened and shirt-tail untucked), but having pulled the third straight late-nighter at the Eagle’s Nest it was all natural this day. Sure enough, she told me I really ought to head home and get a some rest after burning the midnight oil again (it’s always fun to catch one hook-line-and-sinker before you ever make it to the water). With that, the plan was in full swing. I told her that I’d really like to, but there were several important calls that needed to be made before I could (which bought me a few extra hours of the boss thinking I was hard at it). I filled her in on what she needed to know for the tasks I had given her to do and I was out the door for “calls” - with no need to return to the office after accomplishing them. (My boat is named “Calls,” so I never feel bad about her telling people that I’m not in the office but rather out on calls.)
My fishing clothes were in the back seat of the truck. I managed to make the change while driving over to my father-in-law’s garage where I keep my rig. I hooked up to the boat and was at the ramp an hour later. That includes the time it took to stop for gas and pick up a fifth of V.O.. It was setting up to be another perfect day!
Before I had left I consulted the solar-lunar calendar and so I had a pretty good idea of where I wanted to be when. What I didn’t check was the weather forecast. I knew a storm was supposed to be blowing through, so I figured no real sense in looking into it more closely. I should have…
There was a quite a chop on the water from the Northwestern wind. A little larger than I had seen in recent years, but still nothing that really concerned me. Maybe it should have, but it didn’t. The first couple of spots yielded a few follows, but no hook-ups. Moonrise was what I was really counting on anyway. The bite had been off for several days, but with the weather picking up more and more I knew things were about to change (and man, oh man was I right). When I made the long run to my best spot the whitecaps were seriously rolling. I had never thought about it before, but I even wondered what I would do if a wave actually capsized the boat and I lost all my gear. “Holy Cow! What would a guy do without his gear!?” Quickly I refocused on my plan of attack for the saddle I was heading to (that’s a nightmare no one care bare to dwell on for any length of time).
I barely made it to the spot. If the weather didn’t calm I had no idea how I would get back, but that was a concern for later. I dropped the trolling motor and positioned the boat for the best attack in light of the wind. The fishing gods smiled upon me with my first cast. I managed a fat 46”er. I quickly unbuttoned her and took a picture and with the very next cast netted a 38”er. Same deal, but no picture this time. Into the water she went. I know it’s nearly impossible to believe, but again the very next cast I hooked-up. But this one was a behemoth. I got a look at her and my very first 50 was just a net job away. But that’s when it happened...
The wind died off. Not just a little, but I mean it went from blowing in the 20-30mph range to nothing. Nothing at all! At first I thought, “Wow that’s nice just in time for the net.” But not too long after that thought (perhaps my thinking was a little slow because I had had a few nips off that bottle) - still in the midst of the battle - it occurred to me that the wind stopping may not be a good sign at all. The water was placid after rocking and rolling when I went to scoop her up. I mean, completely calm. Into the net she went.
Right then, my phone blows up. I’m not sure why the messages hadn’t come through sooner. Maybe it was the wind. But text message after text message. The last message was the only one I had time to read, “Matt, please tell me you’re not on the lake!!! There’s a tor…” That’s all I read.
Next thing I know - still in the boat - I’m perched 47 feet in the air in a hickory tree.
Seriously…I’m lying in between the consoles on the floor of the boat and the boat is in the middle of a tree. Not a thing else is left in the boat - save my two HDS 10’s and the bottle of VO. The boat is a mangled mess. The 90hp Yammie four-stroke is still on the back. Well, really it was kind of now in the front, but still bolted to the transom from what I could tell.
My first thought: “Crap, I didn’t get the hooks out of the fish…she’ll never make it!” Seriously, that’s my first thought, the well-being of the #*^@ fish! I finally catch a 50” fish and not only do I not get pictures; I lose all gear, my boat, and the fish will probably die. And I'm in a stinking tree in what use to be my boat!
I opened the bottle and spent the night in the tree.

The good news is my insurance company came through with a check. The bad news is they screwed me out of a whole lot of dough. Depreciation!? $7000!? I had three times that in gear in the boat! How do baits depreciate? I tried to explain to him that teeth marks make baits more valuable - it’s called “mojo.”
Anyway, my rich neighbor has been wanting to get rid of his 20’ G3 center console. So stupid that guy is. Barely used and he took less than two grand for it. Maybe it is just me because he didn’t even question the level of “depreciation” I stuck him with. I’d feel bad about it but I don’t think it has moved out of his driveway three times in the past 8 years. I really am doing him a favor (kind-of).
My Yammie was just fine when we got it out of the tree and the HDS units work flawlessly. Gonna have to get a trolling motor because my dufus neighbor thought a 40lbs stick-steer was enough for the boat. Thankfully my buddy can rig everything, and the boat came with plenty of batteries, vests, and anchors. The boat was terribly under powered, but his 50hp Mercury I can trade for a brand new Terrova at King’s Marina, so that’s all working-out fine. In fact, I think I’m even going to end up with a late model 10hp Yammie kicker in the deal, but that’s yet to happen.
Anyway, I’m left with $5,600 to replace rods, reels, baits, and tools. Truthfully, it isn’t terrible. It would have been...had I not got the deal I did on the boat and trailer. Well, what follows is what I’m thinking I’ll end up with from the Muskie Shop.

Good news, really good news! I got an update from the insurance adjuster today. When he gave me that $7000 figure I thought he was nuts. Actually, it was me. The 7 grand was just for the gear (I knew it was wise to keep a $10,000 rider for gear). The check for the rig is coming separately. However, I’m just going to pocket that cash for now and consider what I really want. Do a little shopping around, if you know what I mean, and consider whether it’ll be another Ranger or whether I may be happiest with a new Tuffy. The g3 will suit my purposes for now, and it will be perfect as a second rig (maybe a little big, but it’ll still get me into the skinny stuff).
Oh, and by the way, the Marina came through with the 10hp kicker and my buddy has time over the weekend to get everything rigged-up. I'll be back on the water in no time.

| With my old, lazy dog JoJo beside me, I look upon the twinkling lake thanking God for my luck in losing everything. I lost my boat, my truck, my gear, and my wife. Over the past few months, all were proven replaceable, especially the wife. However, I’m not worrying about replacing her just yet.
I won the coin toss for our yearly vacation destination. My wife wanted Cancun; I wanted Minnesota. I drove most of the way, and asked my wife to drive just a couple hours to give me some shut eye. Somehow, after an hour of sleeping, I awoke to my wife’s cursing, which itself wasn’t anything new. However, the splashing of water into the truck windows was a new occurrence. According to her, she swerved to avoid a squirrel. How that squirrel got onto the middle Blatnik Bridge still fascinates the police, my best buddy/insurance agent, and myself. Regardless, my original truck and boat are still at the bottom of Lake Superior. I guess my best buddy did learn something during our college days because he hooked me up with a new truck and boat in an incredibly fast insurance claim replacement. He even paid my deductible for me claiming it was his way of saying thanks for not telling anyone about our Spring Break escapade in Tijuana. He also hooked me up with a $7000 gift certificate to Rollie and Helens to replace my gear.
We sold the house. My wife went to live her mom. It’s a good situation; they’re both crazy. I packed up JoJo and my clothes, took my gift certificate, and headed to Minnesota to celebrate. The sweet, sweet internet allowed me to order all my gear online and have it delivered to my new residence. JoJo and my Rollie and Helens gear are much better company that that crazy woman. I am sure that I forgot a few things to buy. We never remember everything (mentally and physically) no matter how hard we try. Lesson learned - #214. Remember to get a good nights rest before leaving on your vacation so sleeping half way won’t even enter your mind. Live bait, fishing license, and cold beer are all things that we must buy before arriving at our final destination. That one bait that you leant to your friend on the 2012 trip and was lost on a reef on the bottom of Lake of the Woods may need to be replaced as well.

| “Where you gonna put a fish that big, Griswold?” asked my smug, yuppy neighbor Todd as I was carrying in my shiny new 56” musky replica for all of the family to see. “Bend over and I’ll show ya…”
Ah yes, Christmas. The one time of year when I’m stuck in my home with my crazy relatives dreaming about my next big catch and a day spent on the water.
It was no longer than an hour later I found Cousin Eddie in my driveway emptying his RV waste in my sewer.
"$**tters full!"
In a wicked twist of fate, Uncle Louie stepped out of his car, dumped his stogie in the sewer drain, and BOOM. Adios fishing boat, rods, lures, and random other stuff.
With my boat burnt to a crisp in my driveway, the holiday fun continued. And by “fun” I mean egg-nog filled moose mugs, dickeys, and Jell-O molds with cat food filling. The one thing I had to look forward to was my yearly bonus from my boss Frank Shirley. The days came and went, the family stuck around, and my bonus was nowhere to be found. Finally, on Christmas Eve I received what I thought would be a bonus to cover my new Ranger 620 VS with a 300 hp E-Tec and enough electronics to rival a Blackhawk chopper. With the family gathered around I opened the package, only to find a one year subscription to the Jelly of the Month Club. (“Clark, that’s the gift that keeps on giving throughout the entire year...”)
That’s when I said… “Hey! If anybody is looking for a last-minute gift idea for me, I have one. I'd like Frank Shirley, my boss, right here tonight. I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-nice try, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey $**t he is! Hallelujah! Holy $**it! Where's the Tylenol?”

Location: Minnetonka | I had already put the boat away for the winter on a late, red October night after temps had fallen drastically. Mid November brought a warm weekend and I decided that instead of taking the boat out of storage, I would bring out the old 14 foot, flat bottom duck boat with a 9HP Evinrude. I called up my idiot buddy, Jake Beckman, and let him know that I would be there to get him at 9:00 in the morning and I packed a cooler of beer, just encase.
When I arrived at Jake’s house, his Grandma was sitting out on the glider with his bulldawg, Ernie. His other dog, Burt, came running up to me all squirley when I got there and I went in to see Jake on the couch watching Slingblade in his wool socks and long underwear, mindlessly spinning a globe. “Let’s Go!” I told him and he jumped up and got ready pretty quick. We made our way out to Leech Lake as the wind was non-existent, allowing us to fish out of the dinky, unstable rig we had. We put in with no worries and headed across the lake at a steady pace. Half way across the bay, Jake cracked a beer and said it would probably help with the cold. I was a believer and cracked one as well. We proceeded to troll and cast for five very cold hours with no sign of life.
I had all but given up when I decided to put on a weighted 12 inch Suick, orange with black dots. I threw it out to the top of the steep breaking shoreline and gave it one long pull. After one more pull, I was distracted by Jake’s hand gesture to show me the size of the” super D’s on the cowgirl named Bobbie St. Clair” that he met at the bar the night before. As I turned back to I started start my next pull….tension, Jackpot! One solid motion up and away drove the hooks in and the fight was on. Jake seemed ready as she finally surfaced but then dropped the net in a panic and needed to use his inhaler. She kicked once, giving me a Spray almost too big to believe. Jake was then ready with the Frabill when she came back up and we bagged her on the first attempt.
She was every bit of 55” and I had a pounder of a heart when I saw her in the net. We straightened things up quick and prepared to handle her. As soon as I got a good grip on her and began to hoist her out, Jake leaned over to see and before I knew it, I felt a million hooks go into me as my head went below the big nasty 36 degree water. I only remember popping up once to see a crane on the nearby bank and I was spooked to think that I might not make it there with all of my clothes on. I kicked a few times for shore and heard a harasser behind me in the form of Jake.
He too was kicking for shore and he had passed me pretty quick. I then realized that I could probably swim faster if I let go of the musky, but I just couldn’t. I decided to put it in a headlock between my legs continued my swim to shore. As soon as my feet touched shore, she kicked twice and was gone, like a phantom. Luckily, there was a cabin with smoke coming out of it and we started heddon towards it. When we arrived, the man inside had already seen us and was already prepared with a few blankets for a couple of suckers. Temps plummeted that night and the lake froze over with my gear and duck boat in 50+ feet of water. Needless to say, I lost all of my gear!
I then decided that, since I lost my job from shopping for musky gear online and writing mythical stories on a forum, and because I had 7,000 dollars to spend on new musky gear, I would take the next year off, just to fish.

Location: Minneapolis, MN | unable to edit my original post so here's the story of how I lost my boat.
So my friend asks to use my boat and gear for a weekend as he’s hoping to impress some new girl with a weekend fishing trip and supposedly introduce her to the great outdoors. It’s the day after he's headed north with the boat when I receive a phone call from my friend. He’s hysterical, just keeps saying he’s sorry but doesn’t say what for. Finally someone takes the phone from him and introduces themselves as the county sheriff. The sheriff informs me that my boat is at the bottom of the lake and my truck has been torn up. I think this is a joke and that my buddy has just grabbed some local to help him with a prank, so I tell him to stop f*cking around. He assures me this is no joke and provides me with a number to call for verification. He then goes on to tell me that my friend forgot to put the plug in when he launched the boat and that a storm blew through the area so they had taken refuge on an island but had forgotten to tie up the boat, which was subsequently blown out to the middle of the lake and slowly sank to the bottom along with all gear.
Stunned I ask what happened to my truck; did a tree fall on it during the storm? He says no. That my friend left an open jar of peanut butter on the driver’s seat with the window cracked and that this had attracted a bear which broke into the truck to get the peanut butter. But to make matters worse the bear had taken shelter in the truck during the storm and done all manner of things to the inside that would make one not want to own the vehicle anymore.
