| There are still muskies in Pelican Lake? I haven't seen one in person in about 8 years...granted I normally only fish it once or twice a year and its usually opening weekend but that lake certainly isn't what it used to be when I was a kid 20 years ago... |

maybe the guy who took you fishing when you were a kid knew what he was doing?

| Haha, I still go fishing with him. I know they still exist but the lake's musky population isn't what it used to be, I don't think anyone can really question that statement. My dad (who also used to fish a lot more), used catch 20-30 muskies a year on Pelican, now he's lucky to catch 5. It probably doesn't help that his main fishing partner now lives in Minnesota and he's still pretty wrapped up in maintenance of the cottage and all but Pelican isn't what it used to be. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The numbers were intentionally down, Pelican used to be heavily overstocked. It's managed as a self sustaining fishery to a degree, but the numbers were deemed low enough for a pretty healthy stocking last year of extended growth muskie fingerlings. |

| How many fingerlings were stocked last year? |

| Yup, finally tracked down the data...WI DNR claims 3,611 large fingerlings stocked in 2012, last time the lake was stocked was 1998. Now I can accept the fact that the 1980s and 1990s the lake was probably overstocked but how do you from stocking the lake 16 times in 25 years (1974 to 1998) with a 5 year rolling average of fish stocked per year of around 1,300 to none since 1998 until last year? Wouldn't it have made sense to cut back instead of cutting it off completely? It pretty much correlates with the decline I've personally seen in musky numbers on the lake? |

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | Pelican was surveyed in the late 90's and then put on the "no stock" list, to see what would happen to game fish numbers when relying solely on natural reproduction. It was again resurveyed the last couple of years.
A multitude of factors, the largest being angler harvest, took the musky population down to a number that they were not completely comfortable with. Now, with the bump in the population (these stocked fish I believe are native Pelican fish too) and the 50 inch limit in place, it is in a much better spot to take care of itself for the next several years.
Good things should be happening out there in the next couple of years.

| Well that's good to know. I just wish they had not picked my dad's retirement years to stop what they were doing and "see what happens." I'm not really sure why it took over a decade to figure out the musky population was significantly lower than what it was and probably well below what the DNR wanted. |

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | The DNR actually didn't pick the lake, the lake association was instrumental in the whole process. The PLPOA was upset at the drop in panfish numbers and of course muskies got the blame. The PLPOA, and the hopes of saving money by not stocking, were the impetus for the lake being removed from the stocking list. |

Location: Bloomington, MN | By George!!! The phone has been Boomin' with reports of a fish caught this evening that is a real Jewel!! Yah....that Enterprising and Saint of a gentleman, Mr. Guth, got a dandy. This is not the Second, Third, Fourth, or even the Fifth time he has done well under a "Tournament" situation. The moon is only at it's Crescent stage, and the fish seem so hungry as if all they had to eat was a Little Scattering of Rice. I've been cry'n and Moen' in my Summit beer wishing I could walk a mile in his Moccasins tonight. I sure miss the Northwoods, but I will be traveling west and all I will get is a View of a Desert. Please Upload and Post the Snipe shot of his fish. Maybe some day I will top his fish. I know I CAN! |

Location: Hopefully on the water | Norm.. none of the judge boats for the KWM tourney will call it 50" as they shouldn't. But I would sure be trying every angle to hit 50". This year I think someone will crack that mark for that tourney and riding a nice new Tuffy and possibly 10K on top of it:)
As to the fish. That is one heck of a fish. Congrat's on the catch. |

| Apparently there are a few left, my dad managed to catch two while up over the 4th of July holiday. I didn't see any but there are some really nice weeds coming back in areas where they haven't really been for a few years. Gives me hope that it might be worth the effort to drive up to my grandma's cabin for a weekend or week in the near future. |
