Diversity in Communities and Schools
Nowadays, diversity in communities and schools has become a common issue that involves in everyday communication and interaction. Although there are many positive aspects concerning diversity, it has some negative aspects that affect schools and communities.
Many findings show that diversity brings different experiences that enhance learning. However, many cultural groups experience discrimination that creates the environment of oppressed groups, which, in turn, affects learning. Furthermore, a diverse population in schools experience cultural, social, and economic differences that suggest a new paradigm in education, e.g. transforming schools as institutions that serve to accommodate all diverse students. Furthermore, it is a well-known fact that diversity in communities and schools often leads to racial pressure that affects educational outcomes. Minority school population, such as Mexican Americans, for example, experience poor educational outcomes and they are considered to be the weakest students in the US schools. Therefore, diversity is a complicated problem that requires governmental assistance in order to overcome educational disparities.
Diversity in communities and schools does not mean only racial or cultural differences; it also includes numerous factors like socioeconomic status, special needs, academic performance, and language among others. Diversity in schools cannot be discussed without the involvement of community that impacts students in their everyday activity. To some extent, community plays a significant role in lives of peers, since their parents often keep several works to support their families. School authorities often engage community members to find solutions and offer different discussions concerning diversity issues. Moreover, they provide support for students from immigrant families who lack a sense of belonging to the American culture.
Diversity in communities and schools is a controversial issue in the modern American society that requires attention from the government. Considering both negative and positive aspects of diversity, it should be noted that it is a result of a new social paradigm that occurs globally.
