Posts: 1134 Location: NorthCentral WI | Jim, I would appreciate any info you are willing to share... Could you elaborate on the differences in your two main body styles? Is the built in wire leader an absolute must when building a flaptail? What is the purpose of it rather than a low set line tie? I notice they appear to be at a slight angle down also...? Last, do you add any weight to them? Sorry for all the questions, planning to build a couple and don't want to just make firewood. Edited by MartinTD 2/12/2014 12:37 PM

Posts: 2228 Location: SE, WI. | Martin; The built in wire is NOT a must. Hifin built a nice flaptail years ago where the two end looped wire was fastened by a wood screw about 3/4- 1" in from the nose. Probably, the reason for this was time to essemble. Not sure which one would be stronger, But the screw through the eye sort of spooked me. Either way, after catching a few fish, wire needs to be examined to see if some fatigue may have occurred. I only add weight if I have trouble tuning a bait, or a particular batch of wood that was very buoyant. If you decide to put a bullet weight or two in your body, lean towards the front a bit. I think weight in the back will only induce spinning of the blade. The wire might be slightly downward, but mostly start out just level with body. The body styles I like are the top Frog, which is more the Snoddy style. It seems to slide through the water nice, and give the blade a nice consistant flip out side to side. The lower (bottom) style is another favorite, which pushes a nice bubble wake from the blunt head design. The Middle frog is an old dog turd body that I had left...Last one, Which I won't be building on any more. NO More dog turds for me :) BUT they catch fish!!! The positives to a smaller flaptail is the fish has less leverage to throw the bait. I've built a few W/ Rattles, especially in a good chop, the bait would tilt side to side, and you might get a few clicks out of it. I can just see a few guys run to shake their flaptail...LOL...Don't forget, you shake it more than twice, your playing with it... Martin, Stop and say hi if your at the Milw swap. I will bring one or two flaptails with me. JD Edited by jdsplasher 2/12/2014 6:37 PM
