I have several mid 1990 C3's and C4's. After cleaning them, I found 2 that seem to have lost their cast control ability.
I can adjust them to max pressure and them still seem to free spool. Should I look for missing, broken or maybe improperly installed parts?
Any feed back will be of great help.
Thanks, JMacD

On your reel there should be 2 spool brakes, makes sure they are there.
On the cast control knob take off and make sure the copper washer is there if it is cut a small round plastic washer from a mail jug and install under the copper washer.

I have 70's models of the Ambassadeurs -5500C, 6000, 6000C and 6500. The 6000 was my dad's and I bought the 6500 new. I've had them cleaned and oiled every year but never repaired. They worked well enough. Last year I lost a decent fish. I couldn't set the hook. The drag was bad. It was good enough with smaller fish but when it mattered it let me down. I want all of these reels to work. I want them to work better than new. I plan on handing them down to my kids in the next few years and I want them to use them, not sit on a mantle collecting dust. But I want to give them good, working, lunker fighting tools. I'm really nervous about sending these reels anywhere but there's nobody in the Madison WI area that comes highly recommended. I know, I've spent over a month trying to find the right place to let work on, what is essentially, important pieces of me and my family's history. After reading hundreds of forum posts, PMR stands out as the most recommended, highly praised Ambassadeur Service providers. I looked for a website but I didn't find one. I'm ready to commit...what do I do next? :)

Sorry got over 400 reels in the shop so I'm VERY BUSY now, but on the Older ABU reels best to send them to Chuck at Sportsman Repair he has all the parts for the OLDER ABU REELS.
Don't take this the wrong way but the older ABU reels dont have very strong drags, maybe look at a newer reel like a TORO ?????
I have over 100 of the older ABU reels that I have in my collection, love them all but I would never use one for Musky fishing.

Richard, I sent you a PM regarding a couple 400TE's for a total going over but I see you're very busy. Just some questions. See you at the MN show.

Thanks,

Jeremy.

Hey Richard,

Dropped my 7000i off with you at the Milwaukee Swap. Is there a ETA that I should be looking for it?

I know you probably answered this but I'll ask it anyways. You mentioned an upgrade for a C3 & C4 can you explain the upgrade and about how much it would cost? I have four C3 and one C4.

On the Abu C3 and C4 its best to keep them STOCK
I would not put a power handle on them.

Pikemaster,

I have a 4 NACLs and on one of them, the free spool button is really hard to press down. Is this a common problem with NACLs? Does it just need a cleaning or is something broken? Thanks for your help!

Richard, I took one of the two reels you tuned up fishing yesterday and found it to be very nice an' smooooth, just like a poster said it would be!

Thanks. I'm sure the second one will be as nicely done!

      Richard,

Got out with my 400 TE and my Curado a couple times since you had them, both are running sweet. The new drag set up in the TE worked well on my first buck tail fish. Thanks for hooking them up.

Hi Richard, I had a fish destroy a gear in my 401d today. It is a plastic great that marrys to the metal great that turns the worm. It literally sheared off every tooth and now the level wind does not move.
Can you replace that gear with a metal version? If so, what do you think turn times would look like currently. I am in MN. Thanks, Jeremy

You're talking about 4387? To my knowledge no one makes an aftermarket metal part that is exactly like this. I have that part on hand if you need one.

4387 looks to be the one. If you have one or even a couple to spare I would certainly pay you fair value for them. Probably faster than messing with shimano. I see you are in MN too. Let me know what you are thinking. Somebody should start making metal ones. Thank you very much! Jeremy

Also replace the Level Wind Pawl, and make sure the worm gear is clean and greased.

Richard - I have an old Calcutta 250 that I use for small bucktails and and bass fishing. On the spool assembly, one of the 6 posts that the brake blocks slide on broke off. Would there be any harm in removing the 180 degrees opposite post or the 2 posts 120 degrees opposite of the missing post? I would assume this would leave me with a balanced spool? I never have more than 3 of the brakes on anyways.

just remove the one 180 opposite side that should work

Question on a 400D I have two that I use as my main reels. If I read correctly the (Manual) they come set with 3 brakes on 3 off. How many do you recommend be set. I have noticed that my reel really likes to try and backlash. I thumb the spool the whole time so I really don't but one or two per trip. I have tightened down the spool tensioner but I think that's less then Ideal and could be hurting my casting distance.

Lastly what's the best time (when your less busy) to send in my reels for the Pike Master treatment super tune and upgrades.

If you are casting baits over 3-4oz then I would run 4 brakes on
and keep the cast control knob loose
now till dec is the best time to send reels in
