Hi Pike, gotta question for you. Are you familiar with the in-line ice reels that have popped up in the market for the ice fishing crowd? If so, wondering if you could/would be able to pimp the drag system on the model offered by Eagle Claw. Great little reel, but the drag is sticky. Not good when fighting fish on 3lb ice line. Thinking maybe there is a higher quality drag washer out there which might work to alleviate this well know problem on an otherwise good reel. Brian

This summer send me one and I'll see if I could make some custom Carbontex drag washers for it.

Richard,
It will be good to see you again at the Muskie Expo in St. Paul. I imagine that you will get at least as many reels as last year. My reels worked great after you worked on them!

Hey Richard,
Are the Tranx HG & PG spools interchangeable?
Poked around online and couldn't find any info.
Thanks

I thought they would be but Shimano show a different part # for both so I guess they are not.

PIKEMASTER,
I am in the market for a new baitcasting reel. I understand that this is a musky site, but this reel will be utilized only for bass fishing. It will be mounted on a St.Croix Tournament Bass 6'10"MXF with the intention of throwing smaller/lighter lures. I am far from a professional fisherman, so ease of casting/use is a priority. My budget is approximately $250. I have been a fan of your posts and wisdom for several years and would greatly appreciate your opinion/recommendations. Thanks.

There are some many Bass reels out, the best ones for U are the ones with Dual Braking systems, like the Lew's or the Pflueger reels, they will have Certrifugal and a Magnetic Braking systems.
Daiwa has the new Tatula and Shimano has the New Curado.
I would go to Bass Pro or Cabela's and hold the reel in hand and get the one that U feel is right for U.

Right now I'm backup till SUMMER, JUNE / JULY 2014
I don't do Rods anymore to busy with reels, and on your older ABU reels I don't have parts for them, maybe try Matt's reel repair he has parts for them.
Sorry, I can look at them this summer when not so busy if U can wait till then.

PIKEMASTER,
You seem to be the reel expert, so that is just the guy I am looking for. I am looking to buy a great reel to match my TI 8'6 rod I just purchased. My budget for the reel is no more than $250, but hoping to get something less than $200. I've heard lots of opinions from other musky fisherman, but I'd be curious to hear what you would suggest. I am new to musky fishing, so haven't experimented with any rods yet. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Look at the Shimano 400B is a great all around reel.
Also take a look at the lexa 400, just make sure your hand fits the reel.
U can find Lexa 400 NIB for under $200.00 on EBay.

NO I do not service reels at a show. I bring them back to my shop so I can use a Heated Bath Washer and a Ultra Sonic Cleaner on each reel.

Richard, what do you charge to replace a guide on a rod?

Hi, was curious if the lexa 300 and 400 were basically the same internally? Is the 400 built more durable? Wondering if one is a stronger reel. Thanks!

Ben The 400 is a better reel over the 300 because it is bigger, gears, drag, handle size, the 300 R OK, but the 400 will take alot more abuse.

PikeMaster...Do me a favor and put my mind at ease about the 400D's. I went ahead and purchased one last week to "replace" a 400 Conquest...I already know its a different beast BUT I trust Shimano...always have. What have you seen so far.

This reel will probably make its way to you sometime next year anyways....appreciate the input!

Out of the box the Calcutta D reels are Very Smooth and cast a mile. My big ???? is Durability ????? I won't be selling any of my ConQuest reels yet.
The New 300-400 ConQuests will be out next year can't wait.
