Hey everybody,

I've been editing all the footage we have from this summer and fall and it got me thinking...what exactly do you guys/girls like in a musky fishing video? There's obviously information-based and action-based videos and almost all cover a little of both. I'm wondering what exactly everyone likes though? Would a recap of the day/trip at the end of a segment be a good idea? Just keep the talking to a minimum? Segments that highlight a trip or part of a season?

I'm just trying to get ideas for the video and thought I would ask for your inputs seeing as you are who the videos are made for.

Thanks for your input, Jake Bucki

Jake, for me personally, I like to see the the surroundings so I get a sense of being there on the water with you. Loons, treelines, moon, sunset, sunrise, weather conditions, etc. . . I think a recap at the end of the day may be redundant of what you have just shown, unless your focus is based on education.

The Keye's Outdoors is one of my favorite displays of fishing footage. I like seeing the rig pull up to the launch, the wake behind the boat as you take off, a little action working the lures, and of course the fight and release. Music here and there is always a plus!

dont forget bonus footage of goofy stuff that happens on the water or at the landing. This is what makes watching videos funner to watch again and again.

Avoid using phrases over and over again like "that being said" (I'm talking to you, Scott) and please don't refer to big fish as "Slobasaurus"

Oh yeah, and topwater strikes! I love em. Could watch em all day.
And I like talking as long as the one doing the talking makes sense. After (or before) a fish is caught explain what your doing and why.

I personaly do not like a ton of profanity, once in a while thats fine. Even if it is edited, i feel it takes away from quality.

What i do like in a video is top water strikes, figure 8 strikes, out takes. I like it when the people fishing tell you about the conditions, what they chose and why after catching a fish. Did it coinside with a moon phase or enviro change... For beginers that will keep them paying attation when out on the water, and seasoned anglers it will keep things fresh in their minds.

Another big thing is good camera operation, i know that isnt always possible. Watching a musky movie thats tapped like the "blair witch project" is never fun.

I see where you are going with the end of day re-cap, but I think I would rather hear that information as you go along. I'd like to see somebody explaining what they are doing and why throughout the video. Explain the time of year, the type of lake you are on, the structure, how you are fishing it, and how the fish you just caught was relating to all of it. You might not have to do that for every fish. Tell us what type of lake it is and what you are fishing. Then if you catch a fish you can tell us if it came right off the top of the structure or what have you.

One thing you don't see much of is teaching what to look for on your electronics. Rather than saying we found a deep sandgrass bed, or marked a big school of ciscos, maybe try to show them what it looks like on the electronics. Some of that stuff is not that obvious, and to a beginner, might really shorten the learning curve.

Show yourself working the baits and doing figure 8s. You can explain something, but seeing it on film is worth a million words.

I have a feeling you wouldn't do this, but don't keep the fish out of the water for 5 minutes. Get the fish out of the bag, say "wow nice fish" and put it back. THEN you can take the time to talk about what just happened.

I also like the "action" shots of putting the boat in, casting, etc. as well as the nature shots of wildlife and scenery. It also needs to have some entertainment factor. That could be a video packed full of catching fish (hard to do if you were me!), missing fish, just plain funny stuff; tips segments can break up the video enough to maybe keep somebody watching.

I think there are lots of small particular details that you would just do naturally.

Oh yeah, I tend to like fairly educational videos, but they have to be entertaining enough to want to watch a few times too.

When your video comes out do I get the UWEC alum discount? Good luck on the video!

quality, proffesional verbage, no slang and repeated phrases over and over, 1 video i watched 1 guy said the word "unbelievable" over and over, even on small fish. vidoes like jim saric are proffesional and nice to watch. and DONT take the fish out of the water too long, frusterating to watch someone sit there hold it till its about dead or is dead and then say it was a good release.

Information and not a commercial. I don't mind seeing a new rod, reel or bait, but don't make it sound like you never would have caught that fish, had it not been for that particular bait. But saying you like a certain bait or rod for a particular feature is cool. I like seeing new baits and gear that just came out and what they have to offer.

Not everybody is Hemingway. If you're not a writer or a commentator, don't. Alot of fishing shows and videos have the host going on and on about harmony with nature and the poetics of it all. Some pull it off (Flip Pallot for example), some don't. I don't need to hear about "how beatiful" every fish is.

Educate me. If I'm watching a show or a vid it's more to learn than to be entertained. Entertainment is great and part of it, but I'm sitting down to watch it to learn something. I'd rather watch you work a certain structure or weather pattern and explain "why" and "how," than I would watch a compilation of fish after fish.

And yeah, professionalism can make or break a video. Camera control, good presentation, professional behavior...anyone can go out and video themselves fishing. Be professional, no egos, plenty of info and conversation makes a good video, IMO.

I like the knowledge based videos with little action. Perhaps a few fish caught to prove the technique. I buy books and videos to learn, not for entertainment. Although i did somewhat enjoy badfish outdoors...

How about a sense of reality? You look at a video and it's fish after fish. So how long did it really take? How much scouting went into it? How much prefishing before you turned on the camera? I look at videos and say to my self, yeah, right! In a million years that's going to happen. Back to back to back fish, sure, I really believe that.

Of course you want the video to be action packed and it is fun to watch that way. But lets have a dose of reality too.

I'd like to see some lake map reading (prior to the boat in the water) with discussion on where might be good area's to try. Then go to those area's and discuss what's on the map versus what was found. Hopefully you get my drift ?

The video part can be great but if you're not a good speaker in front of the camera... it completely ruins everything, IMO. It doesn't matter how beautiful the scenery is... how awesome you're working the lure... or how big the fish is... if you (for lack of better words) come across like a complete moron in front of the camera, you've already lost my attention (and probably most viewers).

My pet peeve? Basically, people who basically say the word "basically" too much. Instead of attempting to make themselves "sound" and/or appear more educated... they end up failing miserably.

Thanks a lot guys...I really appreciate the thoughts/opinions on videos. What I really should have done was asked about this before we started filming...but I'm planning on this being the first of several videos so it's never too late to ask. I agree with a lot of what was said above...especially the funny out-takes, lost fish, and lakemap reading. I thought about that this summer and really wish we would've done that.

As far as educational, if there's something certain I want to learn (for example, trolling multiple lines), Gregg Thomas seems to do a great job! However, I feel that I've learned a lot from watching the Badfish videos...even if it's not explicit, there's a lot to be learned from watching somebody fish.

On a side note, it's amazing how many of the small things you wish you would have filmed more of after the fact...Jason Sloan warned me of this and it's so true. Boat driving along, BS'ing around the campfire, etc....you can never have enough footage.

Thanks again everyone....keep 'em coming.

+1 to this.

I agree completely.  :)  Sometimes these are the best part of an entire fishing trip.

lots of luck

Use the word "folks" as many times as you can in your videos.

I have not seen many videos, but I do enjoy watching Bob Mehsikomer's Close Encounters of The Right Kind. Most of it seems like very raw footage, not listening to any commentary and just enjoying the footage with a little background music was great. Very different from anything else I have seen. It sums up Muskie fishing well, with the follows and near misses.

I really enjoy the candid footage. I've watched enough people holding up a muskie to last the rest of my life. Watching someone catch a fish? Seen it enough where it's just not as entertaining anymore. I never get tired of watching Lijewski soaking himself at a crappy launch and saying "Yep, I'm kinda ###in' STUCK...", though. (it helps when you know that particular launch, but it's STILL funny.)

Or when Tony Grant misses a fish and yells "how the ### did THAT happen??!?!" And I really enjoy seeing a fish follow on the 8 -- gets me almost as wound up on TV as it does in real life.

I have to say, the Badfish crew does a great job of capturing the reality of muskie fishing. You watch the Badfish videos, and it's what you go through out there. I get a kick out of Bucher or Saric or any of the big names, it's always fun to watch, but it doesn't resemble a typical day on the water by any means. Having been a guest on the Fishing Guide Show, I realize that what you see most of the time is a compilation of a LOT of footage. That makes for great entertainment, bit it paints a pretty unrealistic picture for the newbie anglers about what muskie fishing is really all about.

I guess to summarize? I enjoy watching the reality. The setbacks, the broken gear, missed fish, electrical storms.. The educational stuff is interesting, because you do pick up a few things here and there, but for me it's all about being able to relate to the normal stuff that goes on out there. Just like any of us, I'm out there to catch fish, but at the end of a day or a week, the memories I take away are often those where nobody caught a fish.

I know this is late but my opin is I can't stand watching a video that is nothing but shots of the fishermen. Watching Joe Bucher show on TV during the muskie segment drives me crazy. Lots of action of his back, nothing on the water. Need a lot of video of the baits performing in the water. Bob M videos usually do a better job of this. It's not that hard to video the bait coming to the boat, and is the best chance for video of hits. Not that hard to video the start of the cast where many hits occur as well.

The action doesn't stop once the boat is at the dock! I love the candid BSing that goes on when we're not fishing. Great comedic value! You could probably have an entertaining video of just that. Musky Town is one of my favorites. The interviews and small cuts of off the water stuff make it a great video to watch.

1. If I don't learn anything then I wasted my time.
2. Tell us where you're fishing. I can understand not saying anything when you're fishing a small body of water. But if you're fishing a large, well known lake, let us know. The local businesses would also appreciate it.

Details! water temp, time of year ('early', 'mid', or 'late' + month is all), depth (shot of sonar + describing where the casts are covering. GPS chart contours would be cool too but only if the spot is not decipherable), weeds/rocks/structure description and visual (point that camera right down at the water).

I agree on the dose of realism mentioned above- be man enough to admit when a cold streak has occurred and share the pain! None of us actually believe you are landing a trophy every time you pull up to a good spot...

NO hysterical laughter for no apparent reason. Landing a good fish is cause for celebration and that's cool, but not for a sitcom laughtrack.

Maybe this exists already... I only have about a half dozen musky videos, so there are obviously a ton that I haven't seen. But one thing I've always found lacking is how a lure is actually *used*.
For instance, I may use a suick or a bulldawg (or superD) one way, but you may use it completely differently. I'd love to see a breakdown at a pool or tank showing a few ways to use a lure to get a variety of actions. Maybe break down what you were doing with a lure after the actual 'fishing' footage? I just want to know how to get the most out of my gear, and I haven't seen much that explains that.

I totally second (or third, or fourth) detailed explanations of electronics. I would buy a video that focused on nothing but getting the most out of my depth finder/gps unit. Seems simple, but I know that darn thing can do a lot more than what I'm getting out of it...

I love fish porn as much as the next guy, but I mostly watch it to try and figure out how to become a better fisherman.

Congrats on the video, and good luck! Can't wait to see it.

Basic details. Bait, Temp, Time of Year, Structure being fished are important to throw out there. Then entertainment is what keeps me watching and heats up the fever.

Follows on camera, boatside strikes/slow motion, bloopers and language will all make me highly entertained

I m with all guys about what I want in video but most of all what I want to be on video - SUBTILES!!!!!!!! I know it's almost impossible dream but my dream is a subtile or captions on almost all musky video. If it's impossible, then I would want non-stop actions like sondag's go fish.
