Location: Bloomington, MN | This fish was caught on a Metro lake last weekend. I'm pretty sure it is a silver/blue pike (basically a northern with a pigment problem), but any input would be appreciated.

I wasn't aware you had any that far down south, they are exceptionally rare. I caught one 4 years ago on Snowbank Lake in Ely. I was under the impression there's only a handful of lakes in the world with them, wonder how that guy got into there... |

Location: Lincoln UK | I've seen a few blue pike photos but that has to be just about the biggest one. The tail looks like it is suffering from a "Truncated tail" a genetic defect where the wrist of the tail doesn't develop properly. |

The Blue pike in lake Erie was supposed to have been commercialy fished to extinction.
Take the picture to DCNR and see if they can identify it for you.
if it is indeed a true blue pike than they are still here and trying to come back.

Location: Monee, Illinois | Grandfather told me about the blue pike in erie (lived in cleveland all his life) I will try to did out a picture of them, but I was told they are all gone, silver pike are still around but told by a couple of Bio's that they are no longer around...

That is definately a "Silver Pike" (also called blue by some). It is a mutation of the northern pike and can be found in many lakes in North America. At one time, Lake Okoboji in Iowa had about 5% of its pike population "Silvers."

| Not the same as the Erie "blue pike" , which were actually pickerel.
There are still blue pike around and i am hoping to catch one next week. If i do, ill b sure to post a pic. |

| The silver northern is quite common here in the Iowa Great lakes, especially in Spirit Lake. I have caught at least four of them already this year. To us they are no big deal but a pretty looking fish. |

| larry ramsell....can you tell us, or show is via pictures the difference between a blue or silver pike. i have caught one that is a sweet baby blue, with mostly clear fins with the white spots, in far north manitoba. i always thought they were the same fish. mine was about 8-10 lbs, caught at sunset and was impossible to show the entire beauty of the fish in a picture. |

Location: Kansas City BBQ Capitol of the world | A Blue Pike was a Blue colored Walleye that went extinct in the upper Niagara region around the 1970's. Up there a Yellow Pike are Walleye and what you see in the pic was a Blue Pike. I fished for them a few times back in the 70's when I was a kid. Never caught one though.

LR: Will have to dig out some pics, but they are both one and the same but variations can differ. The proper name is Silver Pike (still Esox lucius as they are merely a mutation of the common "northern" Pike). They are not sterile. In a few recent years, a friend and I have taken a couple of sliver pike x muskellunge hybrids up to 49 inches from the St. Lawrence River...spectacular looking fish. Very "clear" and light green with no spots from a spoted population.
They exist in many places but rarely get big. My Dad got a 42 incher from Eagle in 1967 and we had no clue what it was at the time...longest I have ever heard of.

The first is what many consider a "blue pike" as its color is definately blue.
The second is a silver pike, a bit unusual as its color is alternating rows of black/grey and silver. Fins pike colored and head looked more muskie like.
The third is the silver pike/muskellunge hybrid I mentioned above.

Location: NE Ohio | The Blue Pike that once occurred in Lake Erie was a subspecies of the Walleye, not a member of the Esocidae family. The last confirmed catch was in 1983, and they have since been classified as extinct. |

| This past month I went to the Freshwater fishing hall of fame and they had a 2 blue pike there. All the plaque said was that it was a rare color and even believed to be a different species at one point.
