As the title asks, what's your main rod for spring bucktail fishing? I'm looking for a rod that is suited for throwing up to probably an 89 and can also figure 8 em pretty comfortably.

Location: NE Ohio | if your talking top end stuff - elk river 8'-6" heavy action.
get the job done stuff - mojo musky 8'-6" medium light action, fast taper.
( 8'-6" works best for me in my boat and easier netting doing solo trips most of the time )

This... I prefer a 9' and for clarity it's a MH.
I'll also use a TI 9' MH when I have a small (6") crank or jerkbait tied onto the Mojo. |

| It can vary, are you in a place where there's no closed season and the water is 40 degrees?, Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Canadian opener? I know of guy's who have caught vary large fish on a full sized Cowgirl on the Minnesota opener. So it depends if you are throwing a Cowgirl or a Mepps #3 or #4 or anything between. |

| Just bought a St. Croix Premier Series PM610MF for throwing lighter 3/4 to 1 1/4 oz bucktails amongst other things. If anyone can comment on experiences with this rod I would appreciate it.
6' 10' is short by today's standards for sure. I can throw these light bucktails with a 8' MHF Legend Elite or Premier Series but looking to add a downsizer rod. |

Location: deephaven mn | Thornes Predator in a heavy is a great smaller bucktail rod. It can throw cowgirls too but will flex a little in the figure eight with bigger baits. The new Stealth series heavy will be better yet as it has a more moderate action. |

| Your question specifically mentions spring bucktail rod so I assume you are focusing on downsized lures. I use a STC Long Ranger for my downsized bucktails and it is perfect. It also works great with downsized topwater lures. |

6' 10' is short by today's standards for sure. I can throw these light bucktails with a 8' MHF Legend Elite or Premier Series but looking to add a downsizer rod. I've owned that rod for nearly twenty years. Don't know if the action has remained the same over the years, but my model felt more like a med/heavy than medium action. It has a very fast action.I actually use it for mini jerk baits and 5-6 inch minnow baits. The rod excels here! I would still go to a longer rod for your bucktails. As my go to, I still use my Premier 7'06" med heavy for most early season use. Had that one for nearly twenty years to. Yea, I know most would go longer, but I'm still old school and if it ain't broke, don't fix it. kdawg |

| For fishing small Marabou, Wiz type, single Mepps musky Killer or Giant Killer I use a Daiwa 7' 3" Bucktail Special rated for 1/2-3 oz lures with a System 13 A3 reel and going down to 50# braid. For even smaller stuff I have Fenwick 6' 6" Medium Split Grip with Cabela's brand low profile Bass type bait caster with 40# braid. I make my own down sized leaders. For anything bigger its full sized gear. I do have Medium Spinning rod with 20# braid for Jig fishing too. |

Location: West Central WI | MHX MU108HF or XHF, or Thrasher 8106 or 8105. All those have the length and stiffness to comfortably figure 8 any of the bucktails I throw. Of those, I will select the one based on the lure weight I'm throwing. |

Location: Black Creek, WI | I've been liking my 9' Chaos Surgical Strike for smaller "spring" type lures. Otherwise, my standard gear gets the nod in most cases (no need for a specific "spring" rod). |
