Location: Athens, Ohio | I found this video on another site. Guy is fishing one of my favorite lakes and hooks a good fish; loses it on a broken Bagley. Strike is at min. 11 and bait is shown at min. 12. Interesting way he has of netting the 36, tho. m

Location: Alberta Canada | Wood bait with a narrow rear it should be through wire for targeting large species. Wood being an inconsistent natural material there can be small flaws that are not easily seen. Add in a narrow section that weakens the body odds of failure is higher
There is design/materials that through wire is not necessary but at anytime there is a possibility the blank can fail it should be through wire
I did plenty of testing on this kind of stuff years ago when I was building plugs for Chinook on the west coast. These plugs see more abuse to the hardware in a season than most musky lures will in my opinion at least |

| Part of the percentage game of catching Muskies is the ability of the lure is to hook AND hold fish. Broken tackle makes for bad fish story. (and unnecessary) |

| Rust out??? Stomach Acid that's the real killer I've had fillet knives melted down to nothing! Good thing I was wearing gloves or I would have lost a finger or two too! burn them right off! |

I have caught pike multiple times with hooks poking out from the inside from ingesting hooks. I don’t know how long they were there or if stomach acid would eat them away in time but they were there

I have done a fair amount of wood working over the years and flaws in wood happen. You can inspect a piece of hard maple, or oak and it will look perfect but inside, there is something. And unfortunately, it often does not show up until you have lot of time and effort into the piece. First few times, I raged and fussed over it. Now, just take a deep breath, set it down. Come back in a few hours and redo. I would never trust a small piece of wood like that to hold a hook, based on past failures. |
