Hi fellows,

Curious to know if there is a consensus on the forum for what is the world record muskellunge.

I was reading an article, which stated:

"Currently, the New York DNR continues to recognize Lawton’s catch as the world record. The Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame and the Illinois and Wisconsin DNRs recognize Spray’s fish as the record holder. The IGFA awards the world record title to Johnson’s muskie. And online sportfishing forums and comment sections are brimming with contradictory assertions regarding who is the rightful title holder."

https://www.greatlakesnow.org/2022/03/who-caught-worlds-largest-musk...

Seems a lot of fishtails are being told about length and weight of muskellunge

Thank you in advance,

Muthsky

Don't out much stock in the old records. They've all been debunked. The modern day record was caught in Michigan a few years ago.

It will take a 60" fish caught in the spring ((in a year of a cold, late ice out) full of egg's and full bodied, or caught late in the fall again full bodied and some egg weight. If you catch a 60" in the summer chances are that it won't weight out. Where I fish now a days not going to happen and won't kill a fish for a record anyway. We see a lot of places where large fish are being put back.

Record is still swimming in the St.Lawrence thanks to Dale MacNair. 57x33, estimated to be between 64-68lbs.

The old records are lore and story, which was the norm back then. Not real.

Interesting article from Great Lakes Now, but several SERIOUS errors.

BillM: disagree. No proof of girth.

Two witness accounts are good enough for me. But I understand what you're getting at.

we will most likely never see a "world record" again, because most muskie anglers are die hard Catch picture release fishermen, unless the fish is swimming off, most guys are gonna not kill a giant muskie to get their name in lights, the pictures with bump board/girth will do that for them.

I totally agree, the photos of that fish are just ridiculous. It looks like it swallowed several basketballs.

That's great news.

Just need NW Ontario to change to open water only (or shorten the end of the season)
