Location: WI | Planning to fish Vilas/Oneida area during the gun opener. Will the bigger lakes still be open with the sustained cold finally arriving later this week? |

Location: Western U.P. | I was fishing a U.P. border lake in Vilas Co this past weekend, and temps were 47-52 degrees. It'll have to get pretty cold, and stay that way for a while for lakes to start freezing up by then. It's possible, but I'm thinking that at least some, or most, will still be open at that time. |

Surface temp here in Oneida County yesterday was in mid 40s. I had to do some final end of season stuff on my dock area wearing waders and it sure felt warmer than normal for this time of the year. I guess it could freeze up by then, but as Cedar said, would need some sustained cold and little wind. |

| If the lakes were frozen guys would bring tip ups and catch Walleyes to eat at Deer Camp. And one year the Muskie Marathon champ was caught thru the ice. |

Location: Selkirk, Manitoba | Ice (0 C) and 8 C (46.4 F) water have the same density and lighter than water that is colder. 4 C or 39 F is the most dense water and sinks to the bottom. So as the water cools to 39 it will sink, and any water that is 46 or warmer will float above to the surface until all of the water is 39 and then cools to the point where ice forms. In other words it can go from 46 to ice overnight if the right conditions occur (shallower lakes). For the same reason some really deep lakes take a long time to freeze or don't freeze as there is a lot of water that needs to cool to 39 (or 4 C). To predict sort of where a lake is at need to probe the temps a bit deeper to see what's up as 46 is always the last "warm" temp you will get given it floats above water that is colder. |

This is interesting. I live on a shallow chain, and have been surprised how quickly it can ice up. |

Yes if ice didn't float we would have one giant ice cube. The lake would frozen solid. |

Very true. I had 44 yesterday morning on the SI transducer and and 42 on the livscope pole 3 feet down. It's been cool and cloudy so the surface was not being warmed by the sun. |

| Snow on the ground east of Rhinelander, going to stay below freezing for some time. Think the lakes will still be fishable, but may encounter some rim ice by next weekend. |

Location: Vilas County, WI | During the ride into work this AM I found my first ice. Drove passed multiple protected bays and smaller lakes, most of which had ice. Single digit lows coming later this week may lock things up except for the large bodies (Trout, Fence, etc). |
