I don't know all the specifics and context of this one in MN history, but great fish, great story.

I'm new to this forum but I have contacted the DNR more than once about this since they started this length/catch/release program for muskies, pike, catfish, and sturgeon about adding tiger muskies to the program. Why would they include pure strain muskies and northern pike, but not tiger muskies? That makes no sense to me. I target these fish with regularity and clearly they should also have a length category for them too.

58 1/4" long. They didn't measure the girth.

Saw an update today where it stated that fish had been accepted as the new C&R record. The angler was quoted as saying his membership in Muskies Inc. helped him understand the importance of safe handling and releasing big fish. He further said the record will again be broken in the next couple years because of the effort of anglers to safely release fish. Nice endorsement for MI.

Being the tail end of the boomer age I don't remember the gun shots but I do know the sound of a fish being hit. (clubbed)
Now it's the sound of hooks being cut. And the sound of getting face full of water as the big girl takes off.

Baby boomer 1945-1964. End of WWII to the advent of the pill. I think that's what sociology teacher told me a long time ago.
I was born in 1960 and 62?, 66? something like that is when you could no longer shoot your fish. dad told me in the 40's and 50's you could tell when someone got a legal fish. I kept the first four legal fish I got 40", 36" (1977), 32",32" (1979) My dad kept the last one in 1980. (39" 1/2) won the weekly prize at Jack's Sport and Marine in St. Germain WI. I was in there in 2021 (now St. Germain Marine) and I was teasing the lady who worked there "where's the fish box" she was nice and said it died a long time ago (she didn't want to say we don't do that any more) I was being nice by not saying we let go many of fish bigger then I've seen in that box.

First guy I knew that released all the fish he caught was in the late 1970s. Had a cabin on the Three Lakes Chain and while he worked and lived in S. Illinois, 500 miles away, he fished hard and would catch 20-25 fish a year (no trolling motor or graph).
Always said he would keep a fish over 50 (no replicas back then). He caught a 52" and kept it but said he regretted it because it was a very long fish, but not thick. He explained to me how long it took a fish to grow to 40", etc. Really knew the biology of it all. I think he changed a lot of folks' minds on releasing vs. keeping fish.

I saw this right when it was posted by supernatural. Incredible fish, although with vermilion being pretty much my home water I’m a little disappointed that the record is from somewhere besides V now. Two records in less than a year from mille lacs is pretty crazy, especially considering how tiny the population of fish is there

Those fish may get dumber when not harassed 24/7.

At least we know that one of them is still in there too.
