Just wondering if anybody uses e-85, noticed it almost a dollar cheaper than reg. 87 unleaded. My Chevy is flex fuel capable. If you use it, do you have any performance issues? Kdawg

Yep I have a flex fuel Chevy as well, you definitely get less MPG..so any savings of E85 will be minimal at best (depending price difference vs regular). I certainly wouldn't use it towing.

Thermal energy says it all. If e-85 isn’t 2/3 the price of gas, you’re throwing money down the drain

I have read that in certain engines, super charged or turbo charged, E-85 can actually increase power because it reduces combustion temps. My Honda is turbo charged, but the turbo does not kick in all that often, so I would not get a real benefit and would likely have mileage penalty. The estimates for that penalty are quite varied. Popular Mechanics had a story where the author said they only time he bought was when driving a flex fuel rental car, he filled up with E-85 right before returning the car.

Hiya,

Ex wife owned a Ford Ranger that was flex fuel compatible... We tried it a few times and found in a given two week window, she would fill up 3 times with E85 as compared to 2 times with E10 unleaded. By the time it was all done, there was no cost savings...essentially a wash, even though E85 was significantly cheaper. The savings were eaten up in the extra tank of gas...
