| kiln dried western red cedar from the big box stores seems fine to me. same for most of the others. ive never needed large amounts of balsa or basswood so the hobby shops have worked so far although you pay a bit more |

| Something to consider is if you have a wood mill near you. Kettle Moraine Hardwoods north of Milwaukee sells a lot of different lumber, much of which they mill and kiln dry themselves. They always had shelves with "shorts" for sale. These were one or two foot cut off pieces of everything from the basic hard maple to exotic imported wood to higher end domestic wood like black walnut. I bought walnut shorts to use as accents and for small boxes. The shorts come from cut offs. Have not been there since I retired but I am guessing they still have that. |

| For turning baits u can buy 2x2 western cedar deck spindles in 36” or 42” lengths. Go to a big box and pick out the good ones without knots. They usually run a couple bucks for the 36”ers. |

| Yes they still have a ton of hardwood but not much in the way of cedar . I live about 20 miles from the Hartford store. |

| try fence/deck builders in your area and buy their cutoffs. I buy mine from a guy that builds high-end Pergolas for a living and end up with top quality beam cut-offs. a lot of it is old growth you just do see in stores. |
