| The mayor of Hudson, Ohio opposed opening a lake in a city park to ice fishing because it would lead to ice shanties which would lead to prostitution.
Now I first owned an ice shanty the year I graduated from H.S. back in 1969, built it with a buddy. We used it for fishing and a place to have a beer that technically we could only drink in an 18-year-old bar. Have seen some pretty fancy ones since then, but must travel in different circles than the Hudson mayor because I have never heard of them leading to prostitution.
Realize this is not a musky fishing concern, but just found it both amusing and confusing. |

Location: Chisholm, MN | There was some stuff in the news about this in the past. I doubt having ice shanties increases prostitution though. They would just do it someplace else you’d think. Seems like a ridiculous thing to restrict. |

| Ran into a WI Game Warden I know and told him about the mayor's concerns. He got a chuckle out of that and said that was one he had not run into yet, that the only common illegal activity with shanties is smoking grass. Must be different crowd in Ohio was his observation. |

| Yesterday I was at the local Y and someone brought up that they had seen the video of the mayor and that he resigned. But, another guy overheard the conversation and said that years ago he had a place on Mille Lacs and that the rumor there was that there was a prostitution ring that visited fishing cabins during the soft water season and then returned to the shanties during the winter. So maybe the mayor was not that crazy. |

No, not at all. I just thought it was interesting in that I had never heard of such a thing, but a few decades ago it was something widely believed in that area, and maybe rumors like that were behind the odd comments by the mayor. |
