hi all,

i am underprivileged and only get to musky fish once a year. yeah cry me a river, right?

every year on the third week of september, i go to spider chain and stay at musky run. for the past few years, it has been in the 80's with water temps super high too.

so, fall fishing tactics probably won't work, right? they haven't been working, at least. past 3 years it has been a one-musky-in the- boat trip and that is with 2 boats. black bucktail seems to be the only thing to catch fish.

any suggestions for the late sept heat? Thanks!!!!

Fish Summer patterns until it's over. Temps and all.

The last two Septembers have been roller-coasters in that part of the world. I tried everything in the Western UP those weeks and managed only a few small fish and some very lazy follows from big ones. I think the weather windows are so, so important when things are yo-yoing like that. I also noticed that I only got one look at most fish -- I went back on moon phases for all of my follows and moved zero. It was maddening.

I live in Colorado used to take a trip in late June early July and a fall trip late sept early oct. On the fall trip if you get cool weather and gradual water temp drop you can put many and big fish in the boat however if I been on trip where its downright hot and you'll gain water temp. Worst then the dog days of august. Fish hard and enjoy your time in the out doors and enjoy your friends and love ones! Life in the woods and on the water is great! Just got back from Wisconsin last night , could not take another day smoke from all the fires in California mucking up the air here in the front range. Too late to get a cottage on a lake or book a guide so off we went sight seeing eating at all our favourate restaurants and walked the shore of a lake my grandparents had a home. Then off to Cathedral Point on Trout Lake! Nice little trip without fishing poles.

good to know--thx.

part of the reason i created this post is that i read that smallmouth relate to sun. when the sun gets to certain point in the year, they head to winter places (florida, i guess) and don't care about water temp.

Over the last 45 years of my fall pilgrimage.. I've seen snow as early as the 13th, and near 90 on the first day of fall. Water temps from the mid 50s to upper 70s as well.

Be prepared for anything..

On some of the lakes up here the pannies are already bailing out to the basin primary break. We caught gills and crappies in 17 just in from 24 suspended in 8 night before last, and there were zero on the weedlines.

sworrall,
My take away from your post is, pan fish (crappies and bluegills) are shallower now and moved up from 28' from 17' in a week, and are off weedlines?

They moved out from the weedlines into the deep water and stayed the same depth in the water column in 17'. 24' is a tail kick away.
