| Want to catch a 40# flathead on your musky gear? Go to the river and drop a clipped bullhead on top of the hole just where a feeder creek/river hits the river proper. Look for places where there's a big drop off just below where the feeder dumps. That's a golden spot. Set up before dark, use heavy weight and put the bullhead on the top of the drop off. Don't drop the bullhead down in the hole, too much heavy debris, huge branches and such. Stay above it all and be patient. Come very dark the big cats will come out and cruise the hole, all the way around and up top, too. Fish all night. They will find that bullhead. |

Location: oswego, il | Netted a 47.5" flathead that are a shad rap 3 years ago. 10lb braid. He had no idea how he was going to land it, I had no idea how I was getting it into a small salmon net. Weight formula put it at 50.4lbs. I drove on the fish until the bey went in and the fish curled then I said grab one side of the hoop no way the hoop or neck was going to hold the weight. I will find the pics. |

Location: oswego, il | Here is my buddy with the fish. We were hammering blue cats all day trolling crank baits and if you can imagine the top producer was a super shad rap! The fish dropped in the water column and the trolling bite died. My partner wanted to leave I said let's cast this windy shoreline for 30min. This flatbread was the 4th fish we caught in 10min of casting. Took 30min to see it and posted is the fight on the GPS.

Location: north central wisconsin | Love the flats. Bullheads not as good on the lower WI or Wolf rivers as are small goats , gills and crappies. Addicted to these things. One thing to note is that these are indicator species and if you are seeing them show up in your waters, it indicates an improvement in water quality. Release the big ones. They're nesting now, so getting tighter to cover is key for another week or so. |

We trot line the Mississippi down here a couple of times a each year (haven’t yet though this year). My son-in-law grew up as a river rat. Last year he caught a 62 lbs. flathead. We call them the “porkchop” of the river. Couple of years ago he caught a blue that was just short of 90lbs.
Been meaning to fish them pole and line in January that last several years and have t gotten it done. As I understand big cats are quite predictable in the cold months. |
