Need some help here, looking for a rod that will do bass lures up to midsize musky lures such as a 6 inch phantom.

I have looked at:
St. Croix MJM80MHF
St. Croix PM80MHF
Tackle Industries MH

Also, am open to any other recommendations/

If your looking for a smaller rod to give your hands a break a st croix mojo bass 7'9" swimbait rod is much smaller in the hands but equally as qualified for small musky baits as a mojo musky 8' medium fast is. The mojo musky even though it says medium fast feels much more medium moderate. I can throw a 6" phantom on this swimbait rod. But it may be the max weight.

I was actually planning to use whatever musky rod i get for the smaller large bass swimbaits, so I'll check out the swimbait rod, thanks!

Just an FYI when using bass lures with heavy braid you may have to swap out some hooks or risk bending them out. Just be aware of the combination you will be putting together. Meaning how powerful the rod is, how much flex it has,, assuming 65 or 80lb, rating of hooks.

Example: heavy bass setup with less flex, 65 or 80lb braid, light wire hooks= likely bent hooks and lost fish.
Their is a reason frog, punch, sticks are so stout. The hooks are much more powerful. 3-4x power hooks.
Its also the reason crankbait rods have more flex to help hook and keep fish pinned without bending out hooks or losing fish due to slack in the line and them spitting the hooks. Just be mindful if you do swap hooks that if you get hung up don't load your rod yankin on it to free it because it will snap your rod before heavy line and heavy gauge hooks bending!!! Lol I've never done it but have seen a few sad faces from those that have. When I get hung up good I wrap it around my hands and pull. I completely ripped the guts out of a tubby tube a couple months ago when I got hung up. My knot held strong, leader was strong, brought back a piece of wire with the tube. That situation would easily snap a rod in either of these styles.

On the flip side the medium and medium heavy musky rods are naturally stouter than bass versions. Look for one that is true to its ratings and will cast the lighter stuff (1/2-1oz) with legitimate distance and accuracy. Either way you go around 3oz would probably be the upper limit. The harder part will be casting lures less than 1oz. With distance and accuracy. Especially lures like husky jerks in the wind around cover they become like sails.

Hope some of this rambling helps lol take care

I have a Muskie mojo 7’6 mh that I will be selling. I originally used it for smaller bucktails, glidebaits and spinnerbaits!

Did you enjoy this rod? I´ve been considering that rod paired up with a 300 tranx high speed, just could never find anyone that reviewed it so I had not decided yet.

It did the job! I only stopped using it because I upgraded to longer rods!

Would you recommend that I get the 8 foot or the 8´6 version of the mojo musky? I do not mind it considering they would be the same price regardless of which one i choose.

Apologies, should have been less confusing with my response. I meant to say that the 8 and 8´6 are the same price.

I am a fan of longer, 9'6" max, just better for figure 8's if your strong enough to get leverage on a fish and you have enough storage space I suggest longer.

SO assuming you're going upto 3 ounces like that 6" phantom there are plenty of options. What you need to figure out is how the rod feels in your hand and the biggest thing for me is the rear grip length. I tend to not like much over 15" rear grip. I cast both left and right but crank right handed so at times I must move the rod across to the other hand. I'm too fat to go with a long rear grip/handle. My favorite is a rod I built from a custom rod components blank that is 7'9" with a 14.25" rear grip. This paired with a curado 300e is a sweet lightweight setup you can cast all day long. Tranx reels are amazing. I have a 300 and 400. Both 5:8-1 as they pull 30" of line....look at that not ratios.

I am only in high school and cannot easily get a job yet so that is a bit out of my budget, in any case I will keep that one on the purchase radar. I hope to only continue my musky arsenal and hopefully I actually catch one soon haha.
