Got a great deal on the st Croix mojo surf spinning rod and was wondering if anyone had any experience using One for muskie. It’s 10’, rated 1-4 oz, my first thoughts were, early season rod, jigging Bondy’s, Or maybe a sucker rod. Also, could someone recommend a muskie sized spinning reel. Thanks.

I think the Shimano Stradic 5000 FGXK would be a good choice...davemp

Surf rods make good Musky rods. I've build myself quite a few Musky rods on SC Legend Surf blanks. They are my favorite rods to use. Have used 10' 1pc surf rods on several builds for customers who really like them. Surf rods are light weight, tough, and built to cast long distance, so use the heck out of it.

As for spinning reels on a 1-4 oz rod, any good brand in size 4000 - 5000 would work fine. Even a larger frame 3500 will do the job if needed. You may want to stay with a lower gear ratio on a bigger reel, as even they have a pretty high IPT.

My spinning outfit for musky is a bps gold cup 7ft. inshore hvy. and a abu garcia elite max 60,which balances the rod really well. The elite max weighs a little over 13ozs. I am not familiar with those surf length rods but it would seem that you could use a little heavier reel for balance? I could be wrong here. With that said, take a look at the Penn Battle 5000 size or a Penn spin fisher vi 4500. I was going to go with the battle but was leery of the weight at 19ozs. But that reel just might balance out that long rod for you. Kdawg

For jogging I'd think 7' would be better. Doesn't st croix make spinning musky Rods currently? Also I know I am not strong enough any more for my 10.5' rod. I think 9.5 is the best all around length.

A rod that length wouldn't be my choice for jigging, but I bet it casts a mile.

Thanks for the feed back. Stopped at the Berkley/Abu store today in Spirit Lake and picked up a Refurbished Penn spinfisher v 4500. Hope it balances well. If your a penn/Abu/Fenwick fan and your in that area, it’s worth the stop.

I have two surf rods from my days living near the shore when I was in the Navy. One is 10' and one 12'. They're great for tossing a bait a long ways and putting it in a rod holder and waiting for a bite. I tried using both for muskie. Repetitive casting is near impossible without tearing up my index finger because of typical muskie bait weights. I found them useful for trolling. I don't believe there's enough backbone for a good hookset with a bondy or sucker. I made a mistake and thought I could just transfer one of those reels to an actual muskie spinning rod that I bought. I used it twice and parked it for the same reason I don't use my surf rods.
