Will you not go to the Expo cause of the virus?

I likely won't go cuz last time I spent like $700. lol

No, if the show goes on the virus or threat thereof wouldn't keep me away. However if it was a marginal show to start with it might be the reason that tipped to scales to skip it.

Yes. At this point, common sense should prevail. There's a map showing one case in Wisconsin and one in MN. That doesn't mean other cases aren't happening and not diagnosed yet. If you see people you know, offer a fist bump instead of a hand shake. Try to minimize touching common surfaces that others touch. Keep your hands away from your face. Wash hands often. Bottom line is live a normal life but take precautions. I just worked at the WI Muskie Expo. Had hand sanitizer in our booth. I avoided shaking hands without looking paranoid and people understood. I'm going to two days of the MN Expo.

I was supposed to be at a booth for a show here in Ontario next weekend but because I'm 76 and in a risk category I've decided to bow out. It's disappointing because I had planned on getting some new toys. I understand the NBA has told teams to be prepared to play in empty arenas.

I’m not going for the same reason I’m not in Wausau Wisconsin this weekend, it’s cuz I’m still in Florida where it’s 80 and sunny. But...this whole Corona thing has got me thinking again about a senior division for musky events. Sorta not fair all the deaths for the virus are us and not having a senior division in a musky tournament. I’m sitting here thinking I am the one who has to get really sick, maybe kick, but if I make it to spring...I have to fish against some twenty something with arms as big as my thighs, and enough testosterone to turn a convent into a harem. Just sayin, “is that fair?” And, if he gets the virus, he may not even get a headache. I demand a senior division at all future events. Let’s start with later starts, earlier finish time, plenty of potty stops, a lunch hour and credit for one 40 incher you don’t need to catch. Maybe a years supply of Viagra for third place.

Went to church this morning and attendance was probably down about 30-35% of normal. I am guessing it had more to do with the day light savings time change than health fears, but, we do have a lot of elderly parishioners so maybe that had an impact? I too went to the Wausau show and while it did cross my mind, was not real concerned. Did wash my hands as I was leaving, but that is good idea any time you are with a large crowd. Like Junkman, I am in an age group that is supposed to be at higher risk. Have a niece who is a section supervisor for infectious disease research at the CDC and she preaches good hygiene year round, washing hands, keeping hands away from face, etc. Have not spoken with her since COVID 19 became a concern, but guessing she would same thing she says about avoiding the flu.

OK Marty, how about listing the advantages older anglers (of which I am one) have over the young guys.

First, based on earlier postings, you have top notch equipment, starting with your big Ranger. The latest and greatest in electronics and trolling motor. Top of the line, lightweight rods and reels, lots of them.

Second, you have the time and resources to come the venue well ahead of time, stay in a fine lodging establishment, instead of a camper, truck cap or tent. You can pre fish for days, while enjoying fine dining in the evening, sleeping a nice king size bed. You won't be driving all night getting the to lake the morning before the tournament to frantically get in a few hours of scouting before you crash after having been up all night packing and driving.

Third, you have decades of experience, which has to count for something.

Wow, thinking about it the young guns should be envious of you, not the other way around ;>),

For the "Super Duper" flu shot they had last fall, you had to be 65. It apparently costs more to make and protects against more, so it is a cost/benefit decision. Cost something like 3 times what the standard cost.

I'm not sure what's "fair"... One of my "muskie mentors" likes to tell a story about how he and his buddies used to go up to Vilas County in the late 50's & early 60's and fish for three days straight, taking turns sleeping in the boat. Lived on nothing but coke and Ritz crackers as the story goes. To quote my old friend: "Of course we didn't catch #*#* because we didn't know what we were doing!"

There's a lot to be said for being 21 and the abuse you can put yourself through. But there's a lot of be said for decades of experience. I remember one particular day, looked like a fine day to me... After an hour he looked at me and said "Hey, let's get out of here. We're wasting our time." We went off to a very different lake, and before we had even thrown a cast he said "Yep. This is more like it. I knew we should have come here first..." Sure enough, we had a decent amount of action that day. It's rare to see him chucking baits and chucking baits. Far more common to see him pick up a rod, clip on a lure, and after two casts say "There's one!" and catch the fish.

Now, I'm not exactly "old", but that AARP card in my wallet reminds me that I'm not exactly young anymore, either. Safe to say that I'd catch a LOT more fish if my body was 25 years younger and I could keep the brain I have now. But those 25 years of fishing since balance it out for sure.

It appears the death rate for those over 80 is just over 14%. But it must be acknowledged the most individual over 80 have comorbidity factors. I do not intend to practice social distancing until it appears to be endemic in my area. Since a relatively high number of those affected(8%) require hospitalization the real issue is overwhelming the medical system. Last Friday I was at the Milw Sports Show and met Doug Wegner and saturday morning found me at the SCI Breakfast in Lake Geneva. Never seen so much hand washing.

I hear the at risk group's are including.
1. 60 years of age and older.
2. If your being treated for cancer.
3. more men in China died then women (they think that because more men smoke then women in China)
4 folks with respitary issues ect.
At 59 I am on the fence but my mom who leaves with me is 85 and my brother in law is fighting cancer, my biggest fear is infecting them.

So, you take a piece of paper towel to the door, open it using that, toss in trash on the way out. Failing that, use hand sanitizer. Have a brother in law who suffers from a rare genetic disease and had to have liver/heart transplant. He is doing great, all things considered, more than 5 years later but he does not use communal towels, does not grab handles like that with his bare hands if he can help it and carries a small bottle of hand sanitizer at all time. He immune system was compromised as part of the process to stop his body from rejecting the transplants. He also had a better than average understanding of hygiene before the transplant, working as a senior operations manager in a very large food processing company. Had him carve the turkey at a family gathering while I sliced the ham (prior to his illness). He washed his hands like a surgeon, drying them on fresh paper towels before carving.

Very few washrooms have paper towels any more only air dryers, my guess aside from expense they got tired of cleaning up the ones that ended up on the floor.

True, but you can carry hand sanitizer and use it when you get outside the restroom.

I don't think it will affect attendance unless it spreads quickly before showtime. There are alot of people who think it's a hoax or it's just a no big deal flu virus.

Some kidding (as usual) in my post, but I find there is a “serious” list of adjustments since my first musky trip in 1974. I’ve even started writing a series of stuff under The Aging Angler moniker. I won’t say “you,” I’ll say “me” simply can not make it through a full day out there anymore without serious change to methods and equipment. I’m no quitter however, so I’m working hard to stay out there. Truthfully, with the Red Tide in SW Florida last year, I returned to golf, attended a few schools, and got a glimpse of what the golf industry has accomplished in retaining the senior player. I focused on what they did with equipment and swing changes, and that was the birth of The Aging Angler. The focus point is that you don’t have to be what you will never be again...you just have to stay out on the water catching muskies any way you can. Hope you enjoy it.

Saw a few Instagram posts today that said the expo was cancelled for 2020. One was a picture of the notification they received from Paul Hartman (the organizer). FYI.

And I just saw a post by Jim Saric on one of the Facebook groups also mentioning that it's cancelled. So I think it's official...

This is a relief to me, though I feel badly for Paul, the anglers looking forward to the show, and the exhibitors. I'm in the 'very high risk' category for a couple reasons and was a bit nervous.

Perhaps it can be replaced with a toilet paper expo. Demand is sure to be higher than what has previously been seen for some hot lures.

The mystery of why there is a toilet paper shortage has been solved: IF a large group of people are standing around talking and one of them coughs, the rest "mess" their pants!
