Compression ranged from 115 to 125

Well....those were decent motors, albeit gas guzzlers, but a pushing 20 year old 2 stroke is a ticking time bomb. You might get 5-10 years, and you might go *poof* the first time you take it out next spring. If you go that route, you have to be prepared for a repower at a moments notice

Hiya,

I'd disagree on the motor going bad just because it's 20 years old. If the motor has been taken care of and all cylinders are within 10% of each other for compression, it should last a good long time.

The old 2 strokes were very simple in design, and due to the oil consumption being higher, were well oiled as well. Taking into account a very efficient cold water cooling system, they can last a long long time.

Case in point: My father has a 1973 Johnson 20hp that has only been in the shop one time to replace the points. Still starts on the 2nd or 3rd pull and runs like a top!!

If anything, taking the motor to a dealer service center and have them do a once over on it for condition. They will most likely perform a leak down test on it which is a little stronger indicator than compression.

If it gets the all clear, get some decarbonizer and decarbonize the engine, get new plugs and replace after the decarbonizing, replace fuel filters, replace the lower unit fluid and you will be off and running for a good long time.

I have a 2000 merc 200 efi. I bought it 3 years ago and haven't had one issue yet. I don't use the oil injection disabled that and mix my own oil and gas that way I know 100% sure its getting right amount. Use high quality oil I use Amsoil synthetic and can troll the big 2 stroke all day long no problem and no plug fouling. I am very impressed with this motor runs super strong. keep fresh lower unit oil in it and mix high quality 2 stroke oil and they will last forever!! They are thirsty though

Solid. strong motors......if you are talking about the 2.5 liter. I ran one for 17 years. Gas and oil guzzlers and not very environmentally friendly compared to the new stuff out there............but always got me from here to there
