Hi,
I thought I’d try and add spinnerbaits to my plan of attack for toothy critters. I had a lots of issues with the spinnerbait getting all tangled up. I could only get it to fish correctly by retrieving it immediately after the cast (or even stopping it in mid-air and then start retrieving the spinnerbait). If I let it sink to try and fish it deeper or hesitated before reeling it in the spinnerbait gets tangled up in a mess.
How do you fishing spinnerbaits, (never used one before yesterday).
Thank you,
Fishysam

Throwing into the wind doesn't help, but throwing with the wind does. When I cast spinnerbaits I only have 2-3" of line out above a 12" leader, I have very few issues that your describing. Also I would stop the bait about 1' above the water not higher

I've had issue with the blade wanting to catch up on the hook every now and then. To fix that I bent the wiring to separate the blade end from the hook end of the spinnerbait open a bit more. That fixed my issue and maybe can help you.

Keep some tension on the line (thumb the spool) while you're casting.
That should straighten out the line and the bait.

If you let it flutter down, be sure to do it on a tight line...

What type of leader are you using? I found that when I used a flexible ( fluorocarbon or seven strand) the spinnerbait would foul or tangle most of the time. I use a solid wire leader without problem. Depending on time of year, I throw a spinnerbait most of the time. Very versatile tool.

I was about to ask the same thing. Coming from a bass fishing background, I've used my share of spinnerbaits, and my home muskie lake has shad, standing timber, and relatively few weeds, so spinnerbaits seem like a natural choice. But casting them has been nothing but frustration. My home lake has some deep brush-piles that I'd like to try and hit with slow-rolled spinnerbaits. It looks like I may have to make long casts and crank slowly. Maybe even add weight or downsize blades.

I also bought an old Blue Fox Muskie Buzzbait off eBay with an enormous blade. Seems like it would be a killer bait, but it's virtually impossible to get a decent cast.

I fish spinnerbaits quite a bit, don't have much trouble at all with them fouling, and they cast really well. Might be the design of the bait is part of the issue, maybe the leader is too flexible or the bait too light...?

One trick to make sure the bait hits the water straight is to thumb the spool a little more than normal and stop the lure just before it hits the water and get it moving forward at it splashes down. Keep the rod up for the first portion of the cast and drop the tip slowly until just above the water as you go into the 8, keeps the running depth consistent.

Thumbing the spool just before the lure touches down eliminates a lot of the fouling problems, and casting with the wind helps.

Well had better success using the bait on my second attempt. You guys are on target. The main factor seemed to be to stop the bait just before it hits the water and keeping slack out of the line.
Thanks again for the great feedback.

a rod designed for the right weight of the spinnerbait also help a lot.it tend to keep the lure straight during the cast,it will not spin or moving head first.jerkbait leader is also an option
