Fished it once this year mid-summer. Fish were all off the break midday. Didn't see any action until low-light on the weeds, but action was good in that period. Mid September I would expect action on the weedline to be pretty good.

With the cool nights we've been having I would say the surface bait bite should be on.

Paul,

There will always be fish on the outside edge of weeds but also spend time on the inside edge in the 5-8 ft range. If nothing is moving shallow, work out deeper as the bigger fish will suspend.

Gd luck.

thanks for the update, vahntitrio! i've never fished spider flowage in the summer. we usually do alright in sept--nothing crazy but we generally put some ski in the boat.

Paul,
I was just up on Lost Land from 8/23 to 8/27. I had pretty decent action fishing the weedy bars in 3-10'. All of my action was in the 3-5' early in the morning and then again the evening. I caught Muskies on both Topwater (Pacemaker) and Bucktails (Mepps Musky Flashabou). Unless there are some drastic weather changes I would think that pattern should hold for the next couple of weeks.

for the past 18 or so years we've been at Musky Run. the last affordable place on that lake. not fancy and no frills--exactly how it should be. it's hard to find places that are directly on any lake these days without it being $250+ a night.

mary's (the owner) husband died a few years back and she put it up for sale just after. so, the days of Musky Run are numbered.

of course, we stop at the Wheel Inn first thing for a burger. Spider Cafe for breakfasts. life is good.

Those are my folks Paul, appreciate the kind words. Mom still cleans the cabins after 34 years. And I agree, it will be tough to see it go. I was 5 when they bought it in 83.

I've stayed at Musky Run every October for the past 5 years and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Missing it this year due to a family trip unfortunately. I hope whoever takes it over keeps it how it is...there aren't many places like that left in the Hayward area.

Trust me. I've approached my mom about possibly doing it but I don't think I can swing what it's worth and I don't expect her to give me a hometown discount. There were 14 resorts on the lake in 83 and now hers is the last one. I'd be taking it over at the exact same age as when my dad did however the resort business can take a toll over 30 years time.

I can imagine it would be an awful lot to handle and would get pretty tiring over the years. I wish you guys the best, whatever happens.

Very tough business. The chain I am on had something like 12 little resorts in 1975. Now there are 3 and one has been for sale for 2 years. Families don't come up in the summer like they used to. Heck, since I moved up to northern WI full time, I am stunned by how many really nice private lake homes get used only 2 or 3 times a year. When we just came up for weekends and some week vacations, I always assumed that we were just there at different times. Some places it seems they come up in the spring to clean up, put the dock in and then come back in early fall to clean up, and take dock out. A lot of taxes for very little use.

PredLuR--super cool to know your family owns musky run! your mom is a sweetheart--always look forward to talking with her. i can't tell you how much my family and i love the place. the 3rd week of every sept, my dad has been going up to hayward for about 40 years and i've been going up for 20. since roughly 1995, we have been staying at musky run. so many great memories and great fish. my personal best there was 42 incher. so, thanks to you and your family for starting it and keeping it going. it is a gem.

if you are around there 9/13-17, stop by and have a beer! reservation under moster.

all--the report.

we had 3 boats. we had a number of follows with decent size but only 2 took a whack at the lure; both boated--40 and 28 inch. both on black bucktails and fish were 11 feet. one boat got a guide for one day on big and little spider and didn't even see a fish.

low as 68 high as 72. we made the mistake of working the shore. we didn't catch on to the deeper water until the last day.

I've always found that lake to fish deeper than most, probably due to the clear water. Thanks again for the report.

This time of year can be tough if it stays warm, I think with the higher water temps the better fish are still out deep and they need that major cool down that hasn't happened. We were up mid August and had the exact same water temps so no major changes in over a month. With the clear water they also tend to feed at night.
