I'm sure there has been a thread on this but I couldn't find it. I know the non spring loaded knipex is slightly cheaper, but put money aside on this because the last thing I'm going say when I have a 7/0 treble attached to both me and a angry 20# fish is "man I'm glade I saved that $10"

I know they've got there pluses and minuses but here's what I drew up

Spring
Pros: ease of operation (especially if one arm is attached to a Muskie)
Cons: spring can rust (making more trouble)

Non spring
Pros: there is no spring to fail
Cons: could be more difficult to operate (especially if one arm is attached to a Muskie)

What do you guys think? Let's focus on the emergency situation (if I'm hooked) because that's when it's most important.

Spring 100%. Knipex warranty would cover a failure. Get the good one at the beginning and you won't have to worry about it.

Spray your tools down with wd-40 every day you use them, and the spring won't rust. My cutters are about 10 years old and look brand new.

Thanks Ryan, here's another question. What float do you guys use to well, stop them from sinking? I want to keep it small as possible but obviously still float.

I like the spring as well. I just use a piece of foam from a pool noodle as a float. Works great, very small and is only a couple cents.

I also like the spring. No float but I tie elastic core around the handle and make a loop for my hand...works great.

I have used both. Like them both. I have the one without the spring and cut myself free of a musky.

I have had the spring for about 8 years now, and like it. Keep it oiled, and you'll be OK.

I don't have the spring and it works ok. Had one put a 7/0 through my thumbnail but not into flesh once and my wife was able to cut it free while I held the fish on LOTW one year.

With that said I think the spring would be nice snd I wouldn't worry too much about problems with the spring. Knipex makes quality stuff!

I don't use a float. They just get in the way IMO.

I agree it could get in the way but, that's better than losing a $60 tool. I like the elastic idea though.

Don't overthink it. Buy either one, keep it readily accessible, and don't drop it in the drink. No need for a stinkin' float. That's my .02.

Spring. Mine rusted and still worked fine. Had it for 8 years then the spring fell out. I contacted knipex and asked to buy a spring. Instead they told me to send it in and they gave me a new pair of cutters under their warranty.

If its a true emergency, kill the fish. just sayin.
I vote for the non spring.

So true emergency as in I'm worried about losing proper function of my hand, fingers, I agree. Not fun but I guess kill the fish. But how you gonna do that? You have a musky bat next to you? I think by the time you beat one to death with your pliers or hook cutters you and the fish would have been much better off to be able to quickly snip the hooks.
Spring may be quicker but probably only by a fraction. Spring might be nice but if the non spring is on sale or cheap, they work just fine.

I honestly think it would be harder to kill the fish than just cut the hooks lol. Even if it was that bad of a emergency and for some reason i killed the fish, I'd still have to cut the hooks out of me.

You've never had a three pound Northern attached to you with a treble through your thumb then.

The spring makes it easier to cut multiple hooks quickly as it reopens itself. Google the model you want, should be able to find a set for ~$45 shipped.

A three pounder ain't the problem. A 20 pounder might cause a little more trouble.

go spring. They are great. I have two feet of dog leash attached to mine with one of those type clips . Snap it on to the net bag mesh no worries if it falls overboard.
