| When do you go with more then a single treble hook and what do you think about using a single larger hook verses tandem trebles?
Example: 1 - 7/0 or 8/0 wide gap round bend vs 2 - 4/0 or 5/0.
Several year ago, I took a Mepps tandem, cut the front hook down to the shank and
replaced the rear hook with a 7/0. I'm not a fan of the material being tied to
a hook (bait is destroyed if you have to cut the hooks).
Been playing with making my own lures and want to ask what your thoughts are about hook numbers and sizes.
Thanks, JMac |

| My simple rule of thumb is 1 skirt = 1 hook. 2 skirts = 2 hooks. 7/0 mustads on everything except very large marabou baits I'll put 8/0 on. |

| Thanks for the feed back. It made me take a look at R & H online catalog. I pulled the "bucktail" section and sorted it by price, thinking the largest ones would show first. The general pattern was what I expected...more expensive = larger baits with mostly tandem trebles. But there were several 9 - 10 inch baits with single trebles:
Sound Science Pulsator 9.5" 2.3 oz single
Sound Science Tremor 10" 2.2 oz single
Shumway Flasher 10" 2.5 oz single
Bigtooth Juice Mini 8 9" 1.5 oz single
Musky Frenzy Apache Triple 8 10" 2.8 oz single
Musky Frenzy Apache Triple 9 10" 2.9 oz single
I'm thinking these are more of the exception for longer baits.
The pattern looks like (as mentioned above) single skirt = single hook & double skirt = tandem hooks.
What is your preferred method for mounting the front hook...double split rings or clevis & split ring or?
Just curious.
