Location: Shakopee Minnesota | i am fairly new to muskie fishing and am always trying to find out more. so i was wondering why lake x are so popular!? i wish i could afford a cannonball but 50 bucks is extreme. what is a good option? thanks for your help. i am also looking for other recommendations for other lure types. |

Unless your a big guy and even then tossing big baits will break you down. Just don't end up with a box full of big baits you cannot throw. That's my advise to someone starting out. |

Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | Lake x makes some sweet lures but they are just a bandwagon right now. Give it a while and you will find some in the stores. I'm also on the bandwagon waiting for the fatbastard right now lol. But if your looking for a good topwater that won't empty your wallet the top raider is a awesome lure and suick night walker is great too. I've also heard great things about the big mama twist'd sist'r and phycho sist'r but have never got the chance to use them. |

| If you are new to musky fishing I would stay away from the big momma stuff. They are great baits and made well but usually need tuning right off the shelf. Topraider and pacemakers are great right out of the box. |

| The FB is easy to cast, in fact if you have not thrown one, practice in open water. They and nite walkers really fly. First time I cast a Nite Walker it would have gone 20 feet on shore if I hadn't slammed my thumb down. It is a smaller, lighter bait that casts like a bullet. Both are loud tail prop baits. |

Location: Chisholm, MN | There are a ton of great topwaters out there that are pretty cheap. Take the topraider for example. Hardly anyone gives it any credit these days, but watch Musky Hunter and you'll see that Saric and his buds put huge fish in the net with that bait every year. Being new to muskies, I'd start with that. The hogwobbler is one of my all time favorite baits as well, but it takes real patience to throw. You need to retrieve it very slow. Slower than most people can even handle. That being said, if you throw it all day over good musky structure, you will get bit. Pacemakers are killer. Twisted Sisters, and many more will do a great job as well. Flaptails seem to be catching on, for good reason. |

-Lake X Fat Bastard - Indestructible, good sound, highest producing topwater in my box to date.
-Matt Wirth Flaptail - Built great by a great guy.

| For me it is tough to beat the Tallywacker and the Dancin' Raider. I don't think they make Dancin' Raiders anymore, but that walk the dog topwater gets bitten more than my others. And the sound on that Tallywacker is the best out there.
Fat Bastard has a similar sound, but mine haven't been chewed yet, except by an ornery smallmouth bass. |

| If you don't want to tune tails, the whopper plopper is great. Take it out of the box, sharpen the hooks, attach to leader, fish. However, tuning the tails has its own advantages. The one thing I will say is if you manage to find a Poe's Awaker just leave it on the shelf. The prop will fall off, usually within the first 50 casts. Thankfully, I don't believe they are made anymore. |

How cheap is pretty cheap? Are the topraiders and pacemakers of the world the cheaper of the bunch? |

Top waters are generally more expensive style of bait anyway, sort of like gliders. I would consider lake X to be a fairly expensive baits. I haven't got to fish them yet, so I can't speak on there quality or action but I've heard great things about them. Still waiting for somebody to get them in stock (: |

| You can never go wrong with a Bucher Top Raider. East to throw, and consistent with results. Just make sure, you continue your figure 8 through your retrieve. |

| Topwater baits are not all designed to do the same thing. As far as prop baits I usually throw Low-Riders, Topraiders, and Pacemakers. Walk the dog baits I still like Jackpots more than anything followed by One-Eye's and Weagle's....if I'm not searching for an active fish. After dark I throw A LOT of Creepers and Hawg's...the slower the better. Most of my 50"+ casting fish have come after dark on a Creeper or Hawg Wobbler, usually when I pause the bait 5-15' out they slurp it right in. |
