I have started making a few gliders out of maple. I have them weighted right and they run nice. My question is if anyone has had trouble getting the screws to hold. I feel they are plenty strong, but the guy at the lumber store got me thinking a little. I epoxy the screw eyes in as extra precaution. Is this enough?

Absolutely, this topic has been been to death before. You have nothing to worry about, you'll have the screw eye open up well before it would ever pull out.

With softer woods, I go with longer screw eyes. But with maple, my only worry is drilling the hole big enough so you don't snap off the screw eye when turning it in.

If you insert the threads in a bar of soap it makes it unlikely the eye will snap off when turning it in. Works great on Oak so Maple shouldn't be a problem

I make all kinds of baits for myself and sometime I go to wire through, but I developed a system that is just as good as wire through when I build glide baits from PVC deckboard, I use 1/2 hardwood dowel pins by 1 inch long I insert the eye screw in to the pin than I install a washer at the end of the screw and tighten it, than I install the assembly in to the bait and epoxy the all thing, guaranteed not to come out, fast, easy and clean. PM me if you need more clarification. glad to help

Thanks guys! these jerkbaits are a lot of fun, but there seems to be a lot of variables in the weight of maple. I do have a few nice topwaters though. LOL
