Location: Illinois | ManitouDan - 2/16/2011 9:45 AM muskellunged--with totally negative attitudes towards someone who would keep a state record fish it makes it hard for reasonable people to discuss anything. "THOSE" fisherman have every right to keep a record fish ---I guess you would slam 14 yr old Sarah from Ky since she kept Ky's new record fish 2 years ago ? She was fishing with a guide --you wish to slam "THOSE" fisherman also ? Ohhh the audacity of keeping a record fish -- I hope Ill's record gets broken numerous times !!!! !!!! !!!!! !!!! ! ! !
Manitou, I see how my post could have been misconstrued. However, your assumptions about my feelings on harvesting legal fish could not be further from the truth. The point of my post was actually: sure would be nice to recognize catches that ultimately are released to be caught again. Nothing wrong with keeping a legal fish, a record fish, or honoring those harvested record fish. Sarah Terry is awesome and I'm a fan of her and those other Cave Run diehards as much as anybody! (playful)You seem a bit uptight this morning, have you had your coffee yet or what? Mike ps- hope that "makes it easier for reasonable people to discuss anything"

I didnt think they were that far south. All of the Tiger waters were not listed. Im thinking the musky world is growing eh? Mike" LR: At last count Mike, there are 42 states that have muskies or tiger muskies!! Now available to most. Propster wrote: "What I found interesting was the records (if they are correct) for Ohio and Pennsylvania. Those are some big fish from states you wouldn't necessarily suspect would produce them that big." LR: Yes, the Ohio and PA records are correct. Can't imagine why you think those states wouldn't produce giant muskies. They have the "right stuff" and have been producing big muskies for decades. PA produced a fish over 50 pounds not too many years ago...and it was released! Last giant from Ohio was 47 1/2 pounds, but it was several years ago. And let's not forget Lake Erie which borders both states...

Posts: 457 | I personally would like to see the illinois record held by someone actually fishing for muskies. Although I'm sure many of the records are held by people fishing for other species. Didn't I see something about the Michigan record being broken last fall on torch lake? Any one fish Winnibigosh?

Illinois has had how many lakes hold musky records going back to 1990? 5? Otter, Shelbyville, Shabbona, any others that anyone knows of? I'm sort of surprised Kinkaid doesn't have a record Illinois musky. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Chad Cain caught one last year that was a few ounces shy? She was released and I also believe she'd have been released if she were a legitimate record. It's ironic how it's taboo for an elite guide to keep a record. Nevertheless I get it. I just think we should find a better way to honor the release records for each state- for instance, maybe Spencer Berman caught a State Record a few years back in Indiana, released it, but doesn't get the same amount of credit as if he whacked it. It isn't like he can claim it on his official resume, and that's a shame. Perhaps states should hire some photo police(forget the tech. term) and review applications for release records. Also purchase on the water scales for the 3 most likely lakes? 2 non-partial witnesses on a certified scale, released, reviewed and verified. Not disparaging the harvested records, just trying to get the CPR folk recognized on the same level. They too, deserve honoring! Personally, and by no means am I forcing this opinion on anyone, I have no problem with bonking a world record. State record, eh- is it worth contradicting my ethics? Nope, not to me! I'd be upset but okay with it if a record fish wouldn't go (of course only after using my home-made muskellunge defibrillator and a full on session of mouth to mouth)
State release records should get their just publicity and recognition in my humble opinion. Mike Witowski Proprietor

Location: SE Wisconsin | Remember these are "just fish" we are talking about. It becomes all too redundant to re-read negative commentary about keeping a fish and spawns no worthwhile additions to discussion. A lot of times I read something that's meaningful to me, the itch to reply is there but ya see, I got this here turkey foot back scratcher and it cures the itch.. Chad Cain, didn't you pull a 40+ pounder out of Kinkaid in SW, Ill, last spring? Edited by Sam Ubl 2/16/2011 1:11 PM

Location: Illinois | Actually Wade I'm just brainstorming and shooting from the hip. I understand states can't afford such a venture, but perhaps there's private money, or fundraising that could occur to make such a dream possible. Edited by muskellunged 2/16/2011 1:13 PM

But here in the General Discussion forum of MuskiesFirst in the month of February people are starting to get the stir crazy from all this cabin fever, at least I am! Just having a reasonable discussion- feel free to respond to the other ideas/discussion within this thread if you are tired of my whine.... Posts: 553 Location: 15 miles east of Lake Kinkaid | It is difficult to believe the Illinois record is under 40lbs. I know they have netted pre-spawn females heavier than the current state record on Lake Evergreen, and I am 99.99% Shelbyville and Kinkaid have multiple fish that would break the 40lb mark. Someone just has to catch one of these fish in early March. For me, the possibility of breaking the state record adds to the "lure" of spring fishing. Maybe this will be the year!!

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | Maryland? wow, Thanks larry 42 states? Good God man what states dont have them? For the guys who want a way to weigh Muskies just look at what the MOMC club has been doing on Lake St. Clair. Private money buys the saclse and they can weigh any fish caught on St. Clair. The use of the new fish tanks make it very easy to get them to and from the scales and back into lake unharmed. These tanks are padded and can be carried from the boat to a cart or right to scale on a dock. Mike

Posts: 81 | I thinks its interesting that PA doesn't recognize a state record tiger musky, even though they have some very large specimens! http://www.fish.state.pa.us/images/be/splashes/2005/arch_spring.htm In NC, we could have used a scale like that a few years ago when my friend caught a 50.25x26.5 that should have broke the state record. We couldn't find a certified scale large enough and 2.5 hours later it weighed 41lbs! He said it weighed 43lb 10oz on his hand held scale right after he caught it!

Posts: 1291 Location: Hayward, Wisconsin | PAfisherman, it was weighed on a Chatillion scale at 52 pounds prior to release. It was caught by Howard Wagner. Here is a quote from an article: "Four years ago, he caught a 55-incher near Buffalo Harbor on Lake Erie's New York side, and five years ago landed a 52-pounder in the middle Allegheny River, wading on a January day."
