Man there are some baits on this thread!

I finished a smallmouth bass this weekend. I had to use 6 different browns to get the effect. I am really pleased with it. The glass eyes are more work than I thought. I save 2 bucks a set to get them unpainted. Not sure if it is worth it It only takes me 1/2 hour to do if everything goes well It usually doesn't!
Happy New Year
John

Thanks for the kind words everybody.

People like Snax , Novak, Fatfingers, and all the other baitmakers have inspired me. They can pic up an airbrush and flat out paint! I need lots of layers of epoxy and many shade techniques with templates to get my effect. The foil base doesn't hurt also. Simply way to much time to put into something but it keeps me off the couch! The scary part is they have nice actions to go with them. Not sure I can get up the nerve to cast them into the mouth of a musky! They might get scratched!!!!!!!!!!

One last one. I finished a up a largemouth also.

I love to ice fish but here in Ohio we are just not getting the cold weather. I guess I can still go out to a pond and play with the actions of the baits.

Take care
John

Keep 'em coming Tigger! I love that you use the foil technique. It really gives your baits their own identity.

Tigger,
BEAUTIFUL WORK!!! You've come such a long way from the Purple Musky Eater, Brown Sucker and the Halloween Special in such a short time it's unreal!!! Whatever methods you are using to achieve this high level finished product are justified. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see the next one's!

It's interesting how the paint on gliders has evolved over the last couple of years. I think Snax and Novak have been the biggest inspiration. Two years ago you couldn't hardly find a bait that had the mouth, gill lines, and pectoral fin painted on them and now lots of builders are including them.

The internet is a powerful tool and has greatly accelerated the learning process for lure builders. Today you can learn in a day what would have taken you a decade to discover on your own. It used to be that building musky baits was a very tightly held secret and this is why you see so many of the old builders (pre-internet) coming from specific areas....Cobb, HR, WydeGlyde, Smuttley for example all within a few miles of one another. But now with all the info exchange available online, guys from all over the world are building baits. I think it's good for most hobbyists but probably not-so-good for the old-timers that used to have a corner on the custom market.

Very well Jed and thanks for the compliment.
What can make or break a custom bait maker is more than just having a great product. It's the total package of customer service, public relations skills, networking and then the builders personality itself.

Many times customers will invest in a certain makers products simply because they believe he or she is a decent human being and deserves the business over someone else who they may not respect as a person as much. Respect goes a lot further than you might think.

I wasn't without my own influences of course and without guys like Jim Wilson and Jed making excellent products there wouldn't be a Snax.

Good paint helps but most important is the action of a bait

No one is disputing that fact.
however, try selling a lure with just white primer on it and tell me how that works out for you.
Paint jobs sell baits whether or not the fish care. The lures that catch fish are the ones that spend time in the water...and those will be the ones that the angler has confidence in. Often it's because he or she has faith in the particular colour pattern and therefore throws it the most.

Snax is right on.

Proper action is a requirement, but the colors available in mass produced baits are limited. So is size to a degree.

I wish I had known of all the great homebrew baits made by the guys I've encountered (on this type of site) back when I was buying commercial over-the-counter type baits. I would have spent my hard-earned money on much better quality baits in sizes, colors and patterns that are not quite as commonplace.

The main reason I started building baits for myself was to be able to make baits bigger, smaller, heavier, lighter, and in different colors and patterns than what I could buy. I fish for muskies a LOT, and I try to pay a great deal of attention to the details as to which bait works and which only gets follows, etc.

As a result, I can take a successful color pattern from one bait configuration and apply it to another...and score more often when I'm out there. I can also try relatively new styles and body shapes. Additionally if a bait fails to produce, I can alter any one of a number of variables and try again.......and have a ball in the process.

I casted a couple of TIGGER's gliders about a week ago. Holding them in my hand and seeing the detail was one thing, casting them and seeing them go into a rythmic side to side 3 foot swash, just reeling them in , amazed me. I gave up on gliders and jerk baits years ago because of a left shoulder chewed up by arthritis, Tigger has given me a new venue to pursue!!

One of each for me also, AAWWSSOOMMEE. Those are amazing baits you guys, I may try and post some of the bucktails I make but they don't hold a candle to what has been displayed thus far on this thread.

You guys looking to make some money? I have to admit though I wouldn't want to part with the kind of baits I'm seeing so far myself!
