Posts: 11 | I live in SW Pennsylvania and the closest good Musky fishing to me is probably Lake Chautauqua in New York. Does anyone out there in "Musky Nation" have some wisdom/thoughts that they could impart to me about who is making the best handmade wooden lures and if anyone has any experience in Lake Chautauqua if there are any sizes, colors, patterns etc. that they have had success with.

Posts: 906 Location: Canada | The best handmade wooden lures? That's a tough one as everyone has their personal preferences, not only for lure or lure maker but also of style of lure ie. Crankbaits, topwaters, gliders or dive and rise jerkbaits. Have a look here in the basement bait makers forum for only a few of the awesome handmade wooden bait makers around, I know where I live here in Ontario, Canada there are several more that don't post here and assume that is true for all over the rest of Canada and the U.S.A.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | For topwaters Rylure makes some real nice ones. Here are a few. I have some of his dragonfly topwaters and they are a work of art! http://bigwoodmuskylures.com/lures.php?cat=topwater&make=RyLure Here are a few of his other baits: http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=40... For crankbaits I really like my Talonz lures. Mike makes some real nice handmade lures. I could only dream to get my handmade Grunts to look half as good as his when I was making them myself. http://www.fishall-lures.com/pms.html Many more to name. Just go to the Basement board. Lots of guys there make small production runs too and are phenomenal painters and bait builders. James

Posts: 360 | I'm here in nw pa and u got plenty of handmade bait right here around u. Wiley, Leo, rozzo baits to name a few. You also have plenty of nice musky waters here in west pa. But if your heading to chatauqua as I am thinking about doing for free fishing this weekend perch is always a good color and usually anything else natural.

Have to throw Greg Nimmer into the mix. All lures are carved by hand. Works of art that catch fish!

Posts: 243 | Mark Rottier's (Iron River, MI) Cabbage Ghost jerk baits would get my vote. All hand made/painted and work great in the weeds. Small batches for friends up until now, but they should be available in the next couple of weeks on the Badwater Baits website.

Location: 31 | Lots of good manufacturers out there! For top waters, my vote is American Hardwood.
I have a bunch of the AHL top waters I'm looking to sell pretty reasonable... even a couple triple jointed wobblers like the one pictured above. Globes and lots of tail baits too. PM if interested.

Posts: 538 Location: northern indiana | thewal2 - 6/21/2011 7:08 AM Don from HHMB is number one in my book. Everything he makes is quality and can make you anything you want. Caught some of my biggest fish on his bait. I.m the second one down on his front page =)mark - 6/21/2011 4:04 AM Hoosier Handmade musky baits are great. Don will hook you up. Without a doubt- All Trueglides. All made with cedar and Joe makes and paints them all by hand. There is a reason they sell out in the first hour of every show and you still cannot find them for sale second hand. Really unique styles too. They are pricey and I think he is taking "break" from making lures, but worth it if you can find them. Brewski

Posts: 3867 | Nimmer Swimmers are pretty dang cool. I bought a huge jointed NS at a bar in the Yoop. His baits were hanging up above the booze. They said he came thru now and then to collect his money and hang more baits. My dad has it now. Can't leave without mentioning the Timberwolf and HHMB.

Posts: 323 | just wanted to say Don at Hoosier handmade is the man. very quick service. custom made and painted me 4 bait and even though his airbrush broke still did them in 3 weeks. I have dealt with many (most) bait makers out there and Don service is the best i have ever came across.

Posts: 1317 Location: Lebanon,Mo | Musky Wisdom Seeker - 6/20/2011 6:46 PM I live in SW Pennsylvania and the closest good Musky fishing to me is probably Lake Chautauqua in New York. Does anyone out there in "Musky Nation" have some wisdom/thoughts that they could impart to me about who is making the best handmade wooden lures and if anyone has any experience in Lake Chautauqua if there are any sizes, colors, patterns etc. that they have had success with. Chautauqua offers some great fishing, mostly trolling due to lake structure, but casting is decent as well.Weeds are treated every year due to there abundance.I fished that lake every summer when i was a kid,but dad was never "in" to the casting perspective of fishing,so the worm/bobber thing was pretty much my only option, but i knew what was in the lake to be caught.I finally went back last summer and rented a very small boat for two days and caught one,and lost two fish trolling. Was never really able to cast due to no trolling motor and casting platform.Anyway,i believe natural colors and black work the best on Chautauqua and fish will be deep through the summer months (20-30ft) following schools of perch. As far as best handmade wooden baits, bunch of good ones out there, but my fav is a wood soft-tailed Phantom anyday..

Posts: 203 Location: Germantown, WI | Seeker, I'd recommend stopping by the Fish Education Center in Fombell, PA. Howard Wagner has a great selection of lures. He also guides for musky. He carries all the big name baits as well as most of the locally made lures from the Ellwood City area as well as West Virginia. Howard keeps kind of strange hours at the shop so it is best to call before you head out there 724-452-4464. It's located on Rte 288 between Zelienople and Ellwood City. You'll get your fill of handmade wood baits there. I have had good success with Wiley Lures over the years. Howard usually has a bunch in stock as well as Leos and others.

Guys I like to deal with the most are H2O Tackle, Big Game, Innovative Tackle Solutions, Pearson Plugs, and Zach Baker. All of them do great paint and make baits to cover any situation you want. That's one thing I really like about musky baits.

Posts: 184 | Thanks guys! I got really tired of trying to self promote so I haven't been showing off my plugs lately. I am letting the plugs speak for themselves and have been busier than ever, imagine that? Thanks for supporting hard working guys making baits right here in the good old USA.
