Location: Ashland WI | I have a Helix 9, and most of the time it reads the correct depth, but shows 2 bottoms on the screen.
If the depth is 20', it will say 20', but will also show another bottom at 40'.
I read a little about this, and it sounds like the sonar is reflecting and reading the signal again. Any idea what settings to adjust to stop this? |

Location: NE Ohio | sound about right on a hard bottom area of the lake if you have the bottom lock set to read that deep if your in shallower water. mine self adjusts into a shallower setting so i don't see 40' when i'm in only 20'. |

Location: Ashland WI | That's not the case with mine. If I set it to auto, the bottom (false bottom showing twice the actual) adjusts to the deeper . The actual readout still shows the right depth though. |

Pretty sure.
The first year I used it, it didn't do the double bottom. I did use it for ice fishing that winter (I assume I changed something), the next year is when it started. |

Location: MN | There have been some instances of this in less than 20' of water and when you are over hard bottom. The unit is sensitive enough that it actually picks up the same echo twice because the return from a hard bottom is more direct and clear than one off mud or sand; thus resulting in it reading double the depth. Try adjusting the settings to those on the attached image.
These settings changes can be found in the SONAR menu tab on your HELIX unit.

| Had the same issue.
hit menu twice
go to "Set up", make sure user mode is in advance
scroll back to "Sonar" on the menu
take the "Max depth" setting from auto to 50 feet
(saying you fish 30-40' max depth")
if you fish deeper then go more
this will make it max out at 50' not 1500'

But if you don't want to see it adjusting the max depth range will make the 2nd reading go away. |

I would say it isn't a problem. All sonar units will do this if the bottom is hard enough and sensitivity is turned up high enough. It's sort of just one tool in reading sonar to tell how hard bottom is.
But if you don't want to see it adjusting the max depth range will make the 2nd reading go away.
If I am sitting in one spot, it is not a problem to adjust the max range to make the reading go away.
Where it gets annoying is when I am fishing in areas where my depth is changing a lot. |

My sensitivity is set as low as it will go and I constantly have double bottom reading, whether I'm over firm bottom or mud |

Same here. I also don't want to turn the sensitivity down all the way. |

It's mostly annoying when I am trolling. Early spring trolling for salmon/trout, i zig zag across break lines a bit. When the depth is changing from 6' to 20' I can't just set the deep setting and leave it. |

Location: Hayward, WI | I would try to change the hertz setting to see what that does for you. If you are getting this in 6 to 20 feet your unit has quite a bit of power at that depth. |

| Propster - did you call HB? Because I am having the same issue and it drives me nuts. There's a reason I run both Lowrance and Humminbird in my boat because I know I can rely on my Lowrance after I get so frustrated I shut the Birds off !!! |

Location: MN | I suspect there will be a software update that will resolve this in the near future. It seems that they are just a tad sensitive to hard bottom, something that can be corrected via software. |
