I posted this on LL as well, but I'd like to hear what you guys think as well.

Need opinions on a kicker, or if it'll even work. Boat is a 17ft Deep V. (see pics)

Problem is the boat rides pretty high in the front already, so I think a 9.9 is out.

Also, as you can see, the stern isn't really set up for a kicker.

What do you guys think a 4 stroke 6HP (to save weight) would do? I like to troll for walleyes and am now getting into muskie. I hate trolling for muskie with the big motor because it's so hard to adjust the speed in small increments.

Any suggestions?

The 9.9 Pro Kicker weighs in at 84 pounds. The 6 hp weighs in at 57 pounds. I'd go with the Pro Kicker, not that much weight difference.

I have a Starcraft Superfisherman 17 foot 8 inches x 100 inches wide deep V . My main motor is a 115 Suzuki and my kicker is a 2017 20 HP Suzuki 4 stroke. With Suzuki the 9.9, 15, and 20 HP are basicly the same motor and weigh the same but for some strange reason you can't get remote controls on the 15. I hooked mine up so I can run it off the main tank or off a small portable tank. With the 2.5 gal tank I have gas left after 2 full days of trolling.
My buddy ha a 18 foot Lund fisherman and his 9.9 dosen't cut it for muskie trolling in windy conditions and he is forced to troll on his main motor. It's fine for walleye or salmon.

Horse, What year is your Starcraft?

Does it have the same stern setup as mine, or is is "dipped"?

Thanks.

2012 its a deeper v than yours. If you want to pm a cell number I could text you pictures of my set up. No Idea how to post pictures on here. My boat doesn't even know the kicker which was installed last spring is there. Even with a 5 foot rear livewell full. Not sure what you mean by dipped.

The older Starcrafts ride bow high/stern low.
Mine is a '95 I think.

By "dipped", I mean is the transom low all the way across, or is it similar to mine, where there is just a low spot for the main motor?

Thanks for the input.

They are light enough I don't think you'll notice a difference .

I ran a older 17ft Lowe with a 9.9 4 stroke kicker that the dealer said would be to much weight in the back. I rolled the dice on it and fished that boat for 12 yrs with no problems. I had a 115 E-tech, the kicker and 3 batteries and my partner in the stern. We had no issues. Oh and the boat fished Lake Erie too.

Mercs web page says 108lbs for the pro kicker. The standard 9.9ml is 84lbs. If a 6hp will get the job done, go as light as possible in my opinion.

I run a Tuffy 1760, possibly a little heavier than this boat. BUT, at full blast, my 9.9 only goes 5.5mph. Just thinking a 6hp might be having you around 4mph. Not a big deal for trolling (though I love speed trolling!) but if the kicker was needed in bad weather or long way from home in place of a non-functioning big motor, that decreased speed and power might be sorely missed.
