I'm in the process of picking up a new bird for my dash. I saw at bass pro the latest release was an 800 seriesThat Kevin Vandam endorsed. It has downscan, gps, and the lower 48 states lake maps built in! Only thing is it doesn't have sidescan. Would I be disappointed not having that sidescan?

Well I fish alot of northern flowages, but have adding new destinations every year. I'd say I'm probably casting 85 to 90% of my time on the water. I also do a fair amount of open water casting in the summer. A little bit of everything. I've never used side imaging so I'm unfamiliar with exactly how it works, or how to read it.

Just buy the 899 it has side imaging AND down imaging AND the same base map as the one you saw at bass pro.Chances are that most of the lakes you fish are not included in the base maps humminbird has a list of the lakes on line I would check if your lakes are included. So I would recomend you get a lakemaster or navionics maping chip.I use side imaging on small 500acre lakes to big lakes you will love side imaging on any body of water you fish

I was told the kvd bird had most of the lakes on there already? So there were no need for buying chips at $125 a pop. For the price seemed nice. I guess I really just need to fiddle around online and check out the side imaging craze and see if it's something I can't live without.
