I have used cherry wood before for topwater lures and its a little heavy for them. I think you should be fine with it for a jerkbait because it does weigh more than some of the other woods I use. i would say go for it

Cherry is actually my favorite for twitch baits, not as good for steady retrieves but great for any baits where the user imparts the action.
