I was thinking about getting an ABU Garcia 6500 C3 reel for smaller bucktails and Suicks ,,,,,,, I heard they redesigned the the old round reel and made many updated improvements to the old version ,,, anyone have any experience with this new version ??? ----- I really like the price ----- jimjimjim
PS --- please don't suggest that I buy a $300+ reel instead ----

I use an older 6600 C4 on one of my rods and it has worked well. I read that they beefed up the gears which needed it. I found that I was quickly going through pinion gears pulling small bucktails with it when I had it at 6.3:1. I switched to 5.3:1 like the C3 and I've had no problems since. The reel won't hold up to big blades so make sure you are saving it for jerkbaits and light blades.

The reel is a much better muskie fishing tool with a power or extended handle added. I also put carbon drag washers in first thing to assure drag performance under high strain. Bass pro has inexpensive extended handles for about $12.

Ultimately there are more durable reels, but an awful lot of muskies have fallen to Ambassadeur "hundreds" series reels.

Jim,

I bought the new C4 this spring and have had no problems with it. I use it primarily for phantoms and WTD.top waters.

They didn't reinvent the wheel, they kinked the handle and changed the stickers. Still the same reel it used to be. Contact PIKEMASTER for more details if you are so unsure.

The 6500c(3) has been around for 40 years for a reason. They are a quality, durable reel if taken care of properly, will provide years of service. My 6500ca is still a reel I occasionally use and I bought it back in 1980. I don't own a new version ,opting for the Toro's. I'm also waiting for the new reel next year. But I would not hesitate to buy a new 6500c3. They do have their limitations though. Like the other guy said,I wouldn't throw the big bucktails or heavy plastics with it, but with the standard size baits, you will be fine. Kdawg
