I have a couple of DCG's that have been beat up by a bunch of fish and now they don't seem to pull as hard. Actually, some DCG's pull harder than others to begin with. Anyone know why or had luck with getting more pull from bucktails that have gotten chewed a few times?

The pull depends on how much the blades are cupped. The more cupped, the less pull.

How much do you think that has an effect on catching fish? I've caught fish with ones that pull hard and ones that don't as much. Thanks for the feedback btw.

The compisition of the blades can effect the pull. Nickle baldes are stiffer than brass blades and typically pull harder. IF you think its effecting the bait invest .35$ in a piece of bucktail wire and rebuild it. The loops do not have to be perfect and it will work just fine. I actually deliverately make my front loop more of an oval as I find it acts like a keel and they run better...

I actually compared the cup of my blades that pull hard and the ones that don't, and sure enough, the ones that pull harder are flatter. In particular, the black bladed DCG's I have don't pull as hard and the orange blades pull harder.

You can tweak your blades to your own liking to make each bait run a bit differently if you'd like. There are situations where you will find you want one or the other or something in betwixed. Just have fun with it, bend a blade, bend both, bend them back, oops, too far, rebuild. Repeat.

I own 2 MM bucktails (both double showgirls). This year they have put 10 musky in the boat for me including a 48 1/4" & A 50". The blades on them have bent in a little from doing battle & now they don't spin too good & the skirts are half gone. The way the blades bent I'm unable to bend them back enough to get them to spin better.

Has anybody tried drilling different size holes in the blades? Could possibly cause a different "sound" in the water.

Never tried drilling holes in the blades, but just put the blades of my DCG on a big wooden block and lightly hammered them down. They look flatter and pretty even. Gonna toss them on Monday and see what happens. I have a back-up in the same color if I effed it, but I figure it's worth a shot.

I had a few bass spinnerbaits a while ago(22yrs ago or so) that had a hole partially punched into the willow blade and then that metal piece was bent out. That produced a ton of vibration and caught lots of bass and pike. The metal piece was also adjustable by bending it closer or away from the blade. I don't remember the brand and they were discontinued.

I have thought about that as well and might experiment in the off season. I know of bass fishermen doing this to some lures and having success.

I figure a cleanly bored hole would add a "whistle" sound to the blades where as a rough tag end like k-Bob said would add a chaotic hum.

We'll see what I can come up in the depths of a cabin-fever fit this coming February.

The DCG that I flattened the blades with a hammer pulled MUCH better and stuck a mid-30 inch fish. Not a monster, but nothing else worked today.
