I have an older (10 years?) Shimano Catala. When I am casting, it makes a louder "whirring" noise. I downloaded a Shimano maintenance guide, and lubed where it said to. I have tried to put all of the "brakes" in or out. Nothing has worked. The reel works smoothly and quietly on retrieve.

Any ideas?

Sure, send it in and get it fixed.

On the cast it is the Spool Brakes or the Spool bearings.

Not a bad idea, but it might cost more than the reel is worth.

I tried pushing all the brakes down, and taking the one brake off that does not go down. Still made the noise. Maybe it is bearings.

I have a smaller Catala. The first one I bought the gears would occasionally grind/touch on the cast, sounded horrible. Returned it for a new one. It does it occasionally as well, just not as often. From checking online, this was not an uncommon problem, which was too bad because it's a solid reel otherwise. If I were you, I'd be satisfied I got ten years out of it and save up for a new reel.
