Ever wonder what the deal is with bananas?? I did. No clear reason exists as to how this superstition came to be, though a few more common explanations, per the Snopes website, include:

• Something about a shipload of bananas that carried some weird bacteria which killed everyone on board.

• When top-heavy ships of earlier eras would sink, precious little other than the bananas they'd carried would be found floating on the surface, thereby leaving some to conclude conveyance of the fruit itself had led to these naval mishaps.

•Spiders, snakes, and other poisonous vermin living among bananas carried in the hold would, on long haul trips, expand their horizons by infesting other parts of the ship.

•Because the speediest sailing ships were used to get bananas to their destinations before they could spoil, those attempting to fish from them never caught anything while trolling.

•Fisherman became ill after eating the fruit.

•Other fruits would spoil more quickly when bananas were being shipped along with them, causing folks to deem bananas "bad luck." (Actually, it wouldn't have been ill fate that resulted in the spoilage of other foodstuffs, but instead the ethylene gas emitted by bananas as they ripen.)

•Crew member injured by slipping on discarded banana peels.

•Fisherman misses landing the big one due to a case of "the runs" caused by bananas he'd ingested.

•Banana oil rubs off onto the hands of fisherman, thereby "spooking" the fish.

•Early anglers in Hawaii would embark upon lengthy fishing trips in dugout canoes provisioned with (along with other food items) bananas. The farther they went, the fewer the fish, causing some of them to mistake correlation for causation.

As I've gotten older and wiser (in theory), I've become more superstitious, not less. Have found that karma is real. So, I don't discount the banana aversion at all.

A pretty well known guide we've been out with a couple of times told us that he never brings out a measuring stick until a fish is in the net....

Got fish every time we've been out with him so i guess it works!

I've also heard the banana thing...

I don't believe the banana thing for a second, last morning of last years Indiana Muskie Classic, I put three bananas in my buddies boat, that they originally put in my boat. Well they wound up winning the tournament catching fish that day, bananas and all and put my boat in to second place. But I will never fish with loose change in pocket, it has to go to the Muskie Gods.

See some trash in the lake, stop and pick it up. Good Karma and it will get you a fish every time.

Have to name your suckers, also extending the net early never works. Leave the camera at home and you're bound to catch a nice one. I guess its a good thing I don't like bananas.

No yellow lighters is my biggest one. No bananas. Check out the link. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EKU0ex2yN7s

Also don't say something stupid like "I haven't lost a fish all season". If you do knock on wood. Lot a fish that was an easy 50+ this year because of that one.

Turn your Go Pro off after wearing it for 10 hours and you will catch a beauty in a figure 8 in ultra clear water.

I keep a lucky four leaf clover in my tackle box. Fished Leech 10/3 thru 10/5 weather was @#$%. I almost threw the clover out Saturday. Sunday the clover came threw or maybe it was the Bourbon Toast to the Musky Gods?

Pile everything possible on top of the net so it's a bear to get out if you have a fish on. Works every time.

When fishing on a familiar body of water with someone who has never fished there before make some bait suggestions for him/her to use. If he/she considers one but uses something different, use the one they first considered. Chances are you'll at the very least get a follow. It peees a fishing partner off but it tends to work ridiculously well.

Make your longest/best cast. Just as the bait touches the water, your partner will hook up boat side.

I have a foolproof method of scoring a fish. Let your wife/girlfriend pick something out of your tackle box. It will cost you a lure, but it's worth it in the end.

Most of the guys in our group have a "lucky" t-shirt they wear when they need a little extra mojo. I've had mine for over 20 years. It's so thin it has an SPF of about 4.

Seeing a lone tennis shoe on the road to the lake is very bad. Seeing the second tennis shoe further down the road turns things all around.

Dip the net at the landing so the fish will swim into familiar water.

Heading out from the landing, flip a silver coin in the air and say "To the Lady of the Lake" before it hits the water.

Never not stop to grab litter. Do it casually; the Lady of the Lake already knows our fate but you might amuse her for a moment and so gain favor.

I've got a musky shirt from Cabelas with a hole in the front of it. I made the hole by yanking a lure back from a limb it was hung on and the lure flew back and the hook hung in my abdomen. Cost me a hundred bucks after insurance to get it taken out.
I thought that was my unlucky shirt, but, since then I have caught a few muskies while wearing it, so now I think of it as my lucky shirt. Plus, it reminds me to be careful with hooks every time I wear it.

When I get to Eagle Lake, I go down to the pier, stick my hands in the water, "feel" the water between my thumb and fingers, and then pour the water out as I stand up. I didn't know why I started doing it, but then later came to realize I must have been subconsciously imitating what Maximus (Russell Crow) does in the movie Gladiator before he goes into a battle (though he does it with the soil).

And my favorite, at some point during the night before we leave for home and after the truck is packed and my buddies have gone to bed (cause we gotta get up early the next AM to drive home), I go back down to the pier by myself and reflect upon everything that happened in the prior week(s) while we were up there. The ups, the downs, etc. I take my hat off, ponder a few personal thoughts and thanks, and then tell Eagle Lake that I will miss her and be back as soon as I can...

Not sure if that's superstitious or just reverence for the resource and this wonderful thing called Musky fishing that we all do, BUT I know I feel like I'd have bad karma up there if I didn't do these things. I guess I'm a little crazy...

(BTW, I also agree with those who stop to take garbage or whatever out of the lake. I do that do, and believe it makes the lake "smile upon us"...)

My buddy and I talked about this thread on Friday and he caught his PB after dipping the net and prayer to Our Lady of the Muskellunge, so I knew it was time to step it up and put on a new lucky hat my kids bought me as a joke. New PB 53 x 22.

I love this site!
