Posts: 400 Location: Metro | I am very interested in buying a winch but just would like to get some overall review. Has anyone had issues with them or pulling baits with them. Read a couple reviews online and some said it was hard to real. I have a hard time believing this but just thought I should ask before spending $300. Also I know the rod doesn't matter as much as the reel but what would people suggest for a double 10 rod/reel combo. Thanks!

Posts: 1971 | Toro Winch is going to be 4.6:1 and it makes blades easy but its not very fast...if you get a revo with 6.4:1 gear and want to pull large blades...it is a lot of work! Edited by IAJustin 9/9/2014 1:15 PM

Posts: 345 Location: Poynette WI. | I have a winch 60, like stated above is a 4:6:1 ratio and it pulls 10/13's with out any effort. I seldom use it because it is so slow. i paired it up with a 9ft rod for throwing larger bucktails or any other lure with a lot of pull. I like the long rod because it gives me a larger range for hook sets and helps pick up some of the slack if needed. I tend to point my rod at my bucktail most of the time with this set up and try keeping my rod in a good hooksetting position at all times. Good luck trying to pick up any slack or speed with the reel though. The reel is very smooth, comfortable and casts like a dream, just to slow for me most of the time. When ever possible see if you can find someone that has one to try out before buying.

Posts: 400 Location: Metro | I really want something that can burn blades without absolutely destroying myself doing it. I can't even pull 10's with my abu 6600.

Posts: 1283 | I would suggest using a Tranx before buying. They are huge and heavy not to mention expensive but they will function great.

Posts: 400 Location: Metro | Thanks for the help. I will probably end up hanging onto the abu brand and get the winch. I like the look of it much more than the tranx and not to mention the price. I have gotten my hands on a winch at the store but haven't been able to throw one. What kind of rod would throw best a 8ft or 9ft rod? I will probably end up with the winch and not be disappointed at all. But you would suggest the 5.4:1 vs the 6.4:1? What do people use a 6.4 for? once again thanks for all the info!

Posts: 143 | I'm sure you're set on an Abu reel, but it may be worth checking out the Lexa PWR400, 5.1: ratio and 27" per crank vs the 5.4:1 ratio Abu that gets 26" per crank. pretty close specs so probably pretty comparable reels. You can find the PWR400 on Ebay for $200. Personally own the PWR400 and have used the 6.4 NaCL. The Abu's are a little smaller but I like the feel of my 400.

Yes, you should see if you can check them out in the store. I found palming a tranx or lexa 400 more comfortable than a revo 60. Obviously others have had different experiences. Size of spool and gears place a bigger part in ease/performance of retrieve than ratio I believe. They all probably get the job done.

Posts: 705 Location: Alex or Alek? | http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=98... Look at this thread before thinking about the Lexa's, I haven't thrown one yet but i have a NACL 6.4 and absolutely love it for my jerkbaits.

Posts: 1283 | The winch is only 4.6 does not come in any other ratio. You are talking about the NACL line in 5.4 and 6.4. I have both and use the 5.4 for big blades and rubber and can do everything else. Its just a better all around ratio. The 6.4 is great for smaller baits topwater, twitch baits etc but not as good with bigger blades.

Posts: 400 Location: Metro | really thank you guys for all the info. Makes a world of a difference hearing this info from other people that have used the stuff. I think I am going to settle for the NACL 5.4.

Posts: 271 | If you throw alot of slow topwater baits such as wobblers or creepers the winch might not be a bad idea. I use my winch for 10s but as stated it's VERY slow. I was somewhat bummed initially that I invested in this reel for 10s but once I started throwing the above topwaters with it as well, I instantly fell in love with this reel. Slooooow crawling hawg wobblers is by far my most productive tactic. I'm far from a pro but thats my two cents. Jaimy

Posts: 156 Location: Alexandria, MN | I have 2 NACL's... a 5.4.1 and a 6.4.1. I put power handles on both. Spent a week @ eagle a few weeks back. Had no problem pulling double 10's with either. I found myself reaching for the 6.4 more often than not because I liked the speed. For the double 13's, I would stick to the 5.4.1. Either way, the power handle (on the longest setting) makes a a big difference as far as comfort and leverage for me.

Posts: 19 | I have been using a winch for three years. Easy to pull double 10's, however I cannot physically move my hands/arms fast enough to bring the bait in at the speed necessary. If you are looking to fish double 10's or greater, I wouldn't recoomend it. Also, the reel is very one dimensional. I cannot use it for jerkbaits, jigging, big plastic or any application where slack line may be an issue, as it just doesnt pick up slack fast enough. I think this issue may have cost me a couple of fish this year where wind was pushing me towards a fish, and I couldn't pick up line fast enough. I am looking to moving up to a salt water reel for big bucktails.

Posts: 1283 | The 6.4 with the power handle does pull 10s ok just not as good as the 5.4 for all day use. I also assume its much harder on the reel.
